As many of you probably noticed, while I draw reasonably cute cats my other furs have a tendency to have a rather felinish appearance. This has been a source of much frustration and I've been working on making my longer muzzles look ok with limited success.
Recently, however, I had an epiphany - longer muzzles wouldn't necessarily look longer in 3/4 view because, being longer, they'd experience foreshortening to a greater degree than short-muzzled kitties. I also noted that we kitties have disproportionately large eyes and so drew the doggy so as to have a bigger nose and smaller eyes.
To test my hypothesis, I doodled this kitty/doggy combo. I think it turned out better (less felinish) than my previous canines, but would love to hear any feedback you guys have to offer. For the sake of illustration, I used a floppy-eared puppy, but I have noticed that canine ears look better when drawn slightly larger and higher on the head than feline ears. I'm still having trouble with puppy cheek-tufts though...

PS. If you're wondering why the paper looks so weird, doodled this on the back of D&D character sheet that I printed incorrectly...

Thanks Tacki. I've been working on drawing equine/draconic muzzles too, but unfortunately have yet to achieve any noticeable improvement *is sad*
It would be cool to see Tacki doodles though. I'm always curious to see how other people go about drawing their characters.

What a most interesting compare and contrast, Kaffre. I think the most convincing difference would be the kitty / doggy at the very bottom.
On a fun note, I don't think there is anything wrong if your doggies have a bit of resemblence to your kitties. After all, each artist has their own style and the way you draw a dog definately says, "Done by Kaffre." :)
Some other fun things to think about is how some artists, in anime particularly, have gone in most interesting directions in portraying cats and dogs. For example, there is a surf-board looking creature in "Azumanga Daioh" they keep playing off as a cat that, aside from some features, is far from being one. Then there's the ever confusing Menchi from "The Excel Saga" that is supposed to be a dog, but most view her as a cat by the way she is presented. Nifty eh?
Lastly, I wouldn't be me if I didn't give you a "Gabby-Gabby-Gaboo!" for being a D&D player! Huzzah! Nothing like a grand adventure in the Forgotten Realms. Nope, nope, nope! :)

Thanks Yosh-E! *hugs*
Truth be told, I don't mind the fact that everyone I draw looks a bit cat-like too much either. My real concern is my inability to draw certain species all-together. I used a canine here mainly due to their prevalence on FA.
Actually, I was hesitant to adapt to 4th edition due to the emphasis on combat and the fact that new rules make it more difficult to create adventures on the fly, but I borrowed the books and plan to give it a try!

I have that problem, too. There are just some characters / species I cannot even begin to draw. That's why I am so amazed by some of the artists on here. They make it look so easy and, well, it isn't. :) <LoL!>
I've heard a lot of people mention that 4th edition was a really solid system. If I get the job I am still waiting to hear back from, I am hoping to actually get involved with some people in the region and play again. The last time I did D&D was back in 2003 and we were playing 2nd Edition with A LOT of goofy exagerations. :)

4th edition is a very solid system. It does a great job addressing my problems with 3rd edition. Unfortunately, it does this by moving the game in a direction I'm not sure I like. Nevertheless, I've decided to give it a chance...
Once again, let me wish you good luck with your job search!
