The species meme! Blank form version.
This project forces one to work with new species and material one may not cover otherwise. Or it is just fun stuff to do if you feel creative, or want to see a character in various forms. Use a fursona or prominent character, trying to keep its recognizability through different species themes. You may be surprised, and find some new favorites. It may be a good idea to research for accuracy if you are not sure. Expanding those artistic horizons never hurt either. :D I made this meme via text journal a year ago, but never made a proper box form, so here it is. (Here is my old doodle for it.)
The extended version is here, and has another row. <--click to get it. Extra row = Microorganism, Other Mammal, Dinosaur and Random Choice.
Have fun and be creative! Post it in this thread if you decide to try it out .
Notes and blahblahhh:
0) When you get to a category your character belongs to, simply draw it as another species in the same group. Example: if my character was a kangaroo, under marsupial, I would draw it as a tasmanian devil or koala instead. Voila.
1) Feliform carnivores include cats, hyenas, viverrids, fossas, meerkats, civets, etc.
2) Caniform carnivores include dogs, foxes, mustelids, bears, raccoons, otters, seals, redpandas, etc.
3) An ungulate is a hoofed mammal, the end. I'm surprised I had to put this up here. Dx
4) Fully aquatic creatures must live their entire lives in water (no otters, beavers, or penguins count for this, those are semi aquatic dearies.) Also think twice before drawing draggy terrestrial/human legs on things that don't have them for a reason... (ie dolphins, sharks, seasnakes, fish, etc.) The illogicality of this trend defeats the entire purpose of being...aquatic.
5) Along the lines of 4, birds (and bats) are tetrapods, having 4 limbs, not six. But feel free to make an angelbird or dragonbat instead if thats your thing.
6) Non-animal can be a plant, fungi, protist, microorganism or some inanimate object you just must draw.
7) Most of all have fun, and perhaps learn something in the process. :D

I usually draw them like nagas, with arms, since it doesn't affect how they move and for utility, but I guess true purists may draw no limbs at all. XD Some ancient whales did actually have tiny hind limbs, but any human like leg is just pure drag and uselessness underwater.
Really? But ungulatesare such fun, and a very common occurrence, (pigs, deer, sheep, horses, goats, cows, anythingwithhooves).
Awww I love this O=
I may need to do this... If I can think of an animal for each XD
I have a character like #3 but she's a 'species' of dragon that takes attributes of local flora/fauna around them to adapt and survive.
So I guess she wouldn't be considered a fully aquatic animal.

this might be fun. :)
although I'll have to look up arthropods again. not every scientific term is all too popular in german language.
and I hear you about aquatic animals with legs... especially dolphins and whales. I could never make it work, and in the end the legs have wandered into the tailfin itself, hence they are horizontal and not vertical as with fish. so, any anthro dolphin shouldn't have a tailfin at all.
side note time: would you consider a mermaid/merman shaped critter fully aquatic?
yeah, snakes become lizard with legs. but, nagas are fun to draw, very mystical and impressive. btw, withing D&D universe, nagas can have any shape between giant snake and almost human, but with some snakelike details (mostly the eyes and tongue). sneaky bastards are always content to gain world domination from behind the curtains. :)

first bit- Yes. That is exactly it. IMO an anthro dolphin shouldn't have legs at all. Most people unaccustomed to furryland find it freakish and decidedly unnatural looking. The logical step is similar to a mermaid or merman but with anthro features and species colors. Basically the same type of anthro most people do, but instead of legs, it has the proper dolphin, fish, whale tail so it can actually propel itself and be... aquatic. I can see the desire to make it go on land and give it people legs though, I guess.
I don't see why snakes must become lizards with legs at all. It defeats the entire point of being and moving like a snake, and since legless motion is defining of a snake, it wouldn't be one anymore. I'd just draw it like a naga but with a snakelike torso and head as well. As for nagas, I usually only think of the original, ancient snake deities from India, but the fact modern culture has embraced them is cool too. :]

I did it O_o
I wish it was bigger, so I could do more detailed drawings, but of course FA has size limits.

I did mine kinda derpy, but hope you enjoy! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5582765/
Now, I don't want to start something up, but why is everyone so against legs for water creatures? Yes, it's useless logically, but furry usually means anthropomorphic which means humanized. Humans have legs, and it's awkward to make dolphins, fish, etc. humanlike without giving them a way to stand up.
While I hate the animation in Spongebob, they go about that problem well. Whales and fish and such just have very short legs where tails would be, like something between mermaids and humans, or they could have them in addition to tails if they were more anatomically correct. When anthropomorphizing something, you have to take a few liberties. Otherwise, Foghorn Leghorn wouldn't be able to hold anything for lack of hands, and MLPs, while quads, couldn't sit because horse legs don't work that way. The point of humanizing is to make them more relate-able, and it's hard to relate to someone that can't do something as basic as walk.
