I hate that this game flopped, especially since I have a soft spot for Laylee the bat. I feel like last year was the chance we had to get some new, unique, and likeable protagonist characters, and then this game had to underpreform, meanwhile...
...Eh, I can stop right here if you don't want to hear a rant about Hat In Time.

I've not played Hat In Time yet, but to tell you the truth... I don't want to. IMO, Hat Girl is about the most uninspired character to come into gaming in the reccent years, and to be honest, I feel like almost every modern videogame star is pretty unispired. First off, they couldn't give her a better name than "Hat Girl?" Second, her outfit is nothing new, and looks like a mashup between Peacock and Parasoul from Skullgirls, with the girl from Mystik Belle (Indie platformer about a witch) thrown in. With nothing else unique or creative about her design, ultimately the MOST uncreative thing about her design is the fact she's human: the most overused species in gaming. Yes, I know, we're all human, but that doesn't mean humans have to be narcissistic about our own species, which is a big problem I have with modern gaming (Hat In Time included) is that it feels like game makers need to make it so humans are the ONLY good creature: that all life is evil except humans. I've hated this about modern media in general, and I feel like it's helped turn humans into a carefree species that only cares of it's own species, with corporate-fueled anti-environmentalists like a pair on DA that I don't feel comfortable bringing up out in the open helping to cement that in our society. I mean, there ARE people who do care about animals and try to make a difference, but I feel like they're often sabotauged by demonization by people like the two I mentioned.
2017 was a year that made me believe we'd FINALLY get new, unique gaming characters in media. So many games were coming out that gave me the will to push on: something to look forward to in gaming. Well...
Yooka-Laylee failed.
Super Lucky's Tail failed.
Skylar and Plux failed.
Clive and Wrench was cancled.
Griff the Winged Lion was cancled.
Lobodestroyo was (probably) cancled.
...And through all of it, the ONE game that stared a generic human-sue was the one that ended up succeeding. I feel like Hat In Time helped to ensure that gaming will never be diverse: that the days when characters like Ristar, Sparkster and other cool characters could make an impact in gaming are forever gone. In a way, I don't hate Hat In Time for the game itself, but for the damage it's possibly done to gaming in general. I know: Gameplay over Asthetics and all that, but I feel like the main star makes a difference. If the main hero is likeable, that makes the game more fun. On the other hand if they are not likeable, that makes the game less fun.

You nailed it! my thouts exactly i wish WISH we could get a protagonist that was deffrent like for example a argonion was the main character for a change in a elder scrolls game. Or that maybe in a Duke Nukem game the alines wher not just seen as somthing to shoot but cool alien races to play as in single and multiplayer ( kinda a stretchduke nukems kinda dead franchise now)
now days all we get is games like God of war call of duty ( to many acion based games)at least in the AAA gaming. also yooka layee oldy enough and Sadly was geared towerds more consols witch pissed a lot of peaple offf ( the PC controls are beary broken)
least we have tons of animal based early 2000s games on ps2

I know, it feels like videogame protagonists are all the same, now, yet villains are as diverse as can be, and that makes it feel even WORSE. Like games with all these different aliens and societies like Star Ocean, I mean I'm supposed to believe that ALL societies of creatures are evil EXCEPT ones that look just like humans? I mean, villains coming in all different shapes and sizes, but the makers can't go any farther with their heroes besides putting cat ears and a tail on a human and calling it a day?
That's arguably why I have such a soft spot for Skylanders. In 2011, SSA brought back something I thought I'd never see in gaming: Diversity! Quadrupeds, anthros, machines, all sorts of things. I didn't even mind the gimmick behind the franchise.
...That's why I also have found myself shifting to my phone for gaming, because it's one of the only places where I actually manage to find gaming that still uses anthros and non-humans. ...Kind of surprised at how many games have pandas. I thought WOW:MOP was a flop.
