Ah. Well much of Evil Dead is itself Lovecraftian pastiche, and Lovecraft himself invented the dread Book of Dead Names (and a rather detailed backstory) as a plot device in his stories. Granted, not many editions outside of the Evil Dead films can be said to be bound in human flesh, but given the nature of this book something like Ex Mortis isn't surprising. The Necronomicon mostly deals with the history of Earth and the universe, descriptions of the Mythos deities, accounts of other civilizations that have come before, hazards to be avoided by the fledgling sorcerer, and of course spells. Said spells range from necromancy to invoking beings from outside to traveling through space and time.
Foolish though is he who casually reads the book, for that way madness lies. Like in Evil Dead, those who subconsciously read aloud run the risk of invoking something. Worse still, those who read may find themselves compelled by an outside intelligence (invoked by their reading, verbally or otherwise) to carry out a dark ritual. So in a way, Kain dodged a bullet :P
