Part 17
“It all started while I was on one of the towers,” Ken explained being tactful with what he told them. “I got into a little scuffle with another dragon and ended up on the losing side of things, but that’s a different matter altogether. Shortly after I was left alone there, the humans showed up and attempted to abduct me while I wasn’t able to defend myself.”
“And that’s something I don’t understand,” interrupted Abyss. “How could humans even be here? First off, they cannot see this place and secondly, to make it to the towers without drawing attention to themselves would be even more difficult.”
“I don’t know exactly how they acquired the means, but they were very capable. They had suits capable of withstanding fire and could be used to glide through the air. If they had been more prepared for a fight, I do not know what could have happened.”
“Humans can fly?” asked Ore quite surprised. “I never thought I’d see the day.”
“We’ve been over this already,” Umi reminded him. “Humans have found non-magical ways to fly a short while ago. They are quite the resourceful species, though how they use such talents leaves a lot to be desired.”
“All the more reason to stomp them out of existence before they become something that might be a threat to us,” stated Abyss. “The Dragon Horde was created to be a safe haven for dragons in this world, but if the humans can find this place then it has lost its purpose. We can either abandon all this or fight to protect our home. I don’t know about the rest of you, but my pride won’t simply allow me to give in to humans.”
“We understand your concerns, Abyss,” Umi replied. “But we will not act rashly or out of fear. The humans may be drawing closer to us, but we know nothing of their intentions or their full capabilities. They may be attempting an attack on us or they might be trying to reach out to us.”
“And we all know what happened the last time dragons and humans tried to come together,” hissed Abyss. “We were almost wiped out. Is that what you wish for? To give them another chance to do that? We were fortunate last time, but we don’t have the numbers or a fallback plan if another Killing War were to happen. We’d have to leave this world completely or face extinction.”
“No, no, not that,” groaned Ore. “I don’t want to go through that again.”
“It is not going to happen again,” Umi tried to calm Ore down as he started to toss and tumble and shake the ground. “There will never be another Killing War.”
“Dragons didn’t believe such a war would happen the first time and that apathetic behavior is what allowed it to happen in the first place,” Abyss pointed out. “We cannot drag our feet on this.”
“And we cannot be reckless with our actions or we could invite the same disaster even sooner.”
“I don’t want another war,” Ore cried out tossing and turning more violently. “I have only lived a few millenia. I’m too young to die.”
“Killing War?” wondered Ken, but he chose instead to draw everyone’s attention back to himself. Inhaling deeply, he breathed a blast of fire into the air to quickly draw everyone’s attention back to him. “Enough! I do not know what you are going on about, but that is irrelevant to what I am saying now! I have not finished with what I was trying to say and I never will if you all can’t keep from bickering among one another!”
Ken’s words and flames managed to quiet the room all at once. Even Ken was silent, shocked that he was standing his ground against several members of the administration and he was still alive. The first sound to be made to break the silence was some clapping and a bit of chuckling.
“Very nicely said,” Shiron agreed with Ken. “These meetings do tend to go on forever once the arguing starts and we don’t even have all the members here. I was almost starting to regret coming here, but you masterfully managed to silence the lot of them. Well, you got the floor back so keep going.”
“Anyway, they were planning on making off with me,” continued Ken. “I don’t know for what, but things didn’t work out for them and so they attempted to attack me.”
“Why didn’t things work out?” Umi asked curiously. “You said you were helpless before? Did you get help from someone?”
“It wasn’t anything like that,” lied Ken to hide Luke’s involvement. “I had managed to recover my strength in time to free myself and retaliate. They fought back with bullets, but those proved ineffective. But then they started to switch for a different type of ammo and they were even going on about how if they couldn’t take me alive that they would settle for taking my corpse instead.”
“And they believed that changing their ammo would have allowed them to take your life?” scoffed Abyss. “Humans may have developed some admittedly impressive weapons, but something as simple as firearms are hardly a threat to a dragon. A bullet would crumple like a tin can against our bodies and at most just give us a mild sting if anything at all.”
“Maybe,” replied Ken. “But I am not entirely sure.” He held out his palm and showed them some bullets. There were a few purple, metal spheres, some of them crumpled and flat. Among them was also a gold bullet with a red tip. “These were the bullets they used on me. I managed to frighten them to retreat before they were able to switch their ammo and in the confusion they did drop some, including this golden one. The purple ones were as ineffective as you said, but they don’t look much like normal bullets either. I feel that we shouldn’t underestimate them if they are attempting to develop weapons that can be effective against dragons.”
“Normally, I wouldn’t even humor such thoughts,” commented Abyss. “But if it will convince the other administrators that we must strike against the humans then so be it. Umi, will you be able to test out the bullets to determine their level of threat against us?”
“I will run the tests as soon as possible,” Umi replied taking the bullets from Ken. “Your efforts could potentially have great benefits for us.”
“I am just glad to be able to help,” Ken replied with a little bow. “I just wish I could have had more to contribute.”
“You have done more than enough,” assured Shiron. “And I think with that, this meeting can be considered a huge success. Really glad that I didn’t miss it.”
“Then I will be on my way,” Abyss said. “But I want to know the results of the test as soon as possible.”
“I will send word to you immediately,” promised Umi.
“Glad we are done,” yawned Ore. “Now I can sleep.” Barely even moving, Ore simply closed his eyes and fell sound asleep, his snoring booming loud. Umi didn’t seem very eager to stay and listen and left quite quickly with Abyss not far behind.
“You did quite a great job,” Shiron praised Ken. “Even in the rare occasions that all of us are here we rarely do get much accomplished.”
“I still wish I could have done more,” admitted Ken. “We still have no idea what humans were doing here, but from what I was able to see it didn’t seem like it was anything peaceful.”
“And you sound very distraught by that,” Shiron pointed out.
“Because I was originally human like all the button born here and all we want is to be accepted by the real dragons,” he explained. “If humans are preparing an attack I fear that it’ll only make things worse for us. Now I wonder if I shouldn’t have not gotten involved at all. I omitted Luke’s involvement because he’s got enough to deal with getting ready for his test in a few days.”
“Very commendable of you and your fears are understandable,” agreed Shiron. “For now I’d suggest just taking some time to rest and recover. I doubt any danger will be coming any time soon. Just have faith that it will be handled and such dangers will never come to pass.”
“Thanks,” Ken said smiling a little. “I actually feel a bit better. I will feel a lot better after I soak in some lava for a bit. Luke’s training is coming along rather well so far if you’re curious. I think he might just be able to pass his test against Abyss.”
“I have faith in him too,” Shiron replied as Ken took his leave. When he was alone save for the snoozing Ore, the Wind Dragon let out a sigh. “I never would have thought that humans would have been able to find this place so easily without magic. I can only hope that it will be a long time before they try anything else. Dragons like Luke and his friends just wish for a peaceful life. Should another Killing War occur, I fear they might be the ones who will suffer the most.”
“So, this is your place?” asked Luke quite intrigued seeing all the strange gadgets and gizmos that Circuit had all over the room making it rather difficult to move his heavyset frame about. He figured the place was so messy now as a result of the explosion prior, but judging by just how messy the place looked it was likely a cluttered mess even before that. “Hope I don’t belly bump anything you’re-” Luke stopped abruptly when his gut collided with something and knocked it down. He couldn’t see what it was, but by the sound it made it was metal and know in pieces. “Oh! I’m sorry! I can’t see very well below my gut. I hope that wasn’t anything important!”
“Oh, that’s quite fine, bzzzzt,” Circuit replied as he tried to clean all the soot off of his body. Luke was able to see he had emerald scales underneath with silver lines going across his body resembling a circuit board. “That was just an old satellite dish I was working on. I’d have probably tossed it ages ago if I wasn’t such a pack rat when it comes to this stuff.”
“You sure like this stuff don’t you,” commented Luke. “Are you a techno dragon or something?”
“I guess I could be considered that,” Circuit replied. “I’ve always liked dragons and technology and now I can enjoy both.”
“It sure is a cool combination,” added Luke. “I haven’t seen a dragon like you around here.”
“Dragons are mostly akin to magic or brute strength,” explained Circuit. “They seem to prefer to do things magically and ignore ways of incorporating technology, bzzzt. Even among the button born they mostly seem to prefer the way dragons have done things for countless eons, but since humans have come such a long way with technology, dragoms should be able to do the same and so I’ve worked and tried to make things that would help benefit everyone here at the Dragon Horde. But I’ve been met with… setbacks.”
“I think I’ve seen a couple of them,” Luke replied. “That last one was a particularly big one.”
“The explosions?” said Circuit. “Those are problems too, bzzzzt, but if you wanna make progress you gotta blow up a little. No, my real issues are getting dragons to accept my inventions. Button borns are typically more inclined if they aren’t as worried about being looked down on by real dragons, but some real dragons have actually shown an interest in them too. However, I have had one huge success.”
“What’s that?” asked Luke.
“It’s a cellphone for dragons,” he explained. “I call it the Ryu.”
“Oh, I’ve heard of that,” replied Luke. “My friends Drag and Felix have one. I plan to get one too when I have a chance to.”
“You can have one now,” Circuit offered. “I have a new model design made up and it is the best way to keep in touch with all your friends here.”
“That’d be great!” cheered Luke hugging Circuit tightly. His body swayed around and his tail swung around and knocked a few more things over. “Sorry again.”
“Heh, you’re sure a happy-go-lucky fellow, bzzzt,” chuckled Circuit as Luke put him back down. “Nothing seems to be any more broken than it was to start with. Anywho, let’s get you a Ryu. What color would you like?”
“How about red?” asked Luke.
“I got red, bzzzt,” Circuit answered and opened up a draw that had several of the phones like Drag and Felix had, though the design did seem sleekier. He handed it to Luke who curiously tapped on the screen and watched it turn on. “What do you think?”
“Awesome! It even has a touch screen,” Luke said playfully poking it with his gloved hand. “I don’t even need to take my gloves off. How were you able to make something like this?”
“It’s a mix of technology with some magic materials,” he explained. “The results have to be very precise to get them to work together properly or… well…”
“It explodes,” figured Luke.
“Yeah,” he nodded. “An understandable reason why dragons don’t want to use them, but the Ryu has proven very effective and a popular tool to have around. Light even is attempting to help get them in the hands of all the dragons here and to make sure new dragon arrivals are given one too, but with limited supplies and so many dragons still without one it’s going to take a lot of time regardless of how much approval it’s given. I make them all myself after all.”
“You make them all yourself?” asked Luke even more amazed. “And they work exactly like a real phone?”
“Pretty much,” he told Luke. “But it does have quite a number of limitations. They only work within the Dragon Horde’s area. And the number system is a bit different than a regular phone. The Ryus can only call other Ryus.”
“Then I can’t call anyone back in the human world,” concluded Luke. “Guess it’s a bit of a shame I can’t contact my human friends. It’d be a bit fun to brag about becoming a big Wind Dragon, but that probably wouldn’t be a good idea.”
“Well, you can have my number,” offered Circuit. “Here, let me show you how to add it to your phone.”
“Thanks,” said Luke as he watched Circuit do that. “I’ll have to get my friends’ numbers when I see them too.”
“Maybe we can all hang out sometime,” suggested Circuit.
“Sure,” smiled Luke. “Anyway, I hate to run, but I’m a bit tired and a lot hungry. I’m going to head back to my room to see about ordering some food and then I’m going to pig out and get some shut eye.”
“You can use the Ryu to call for food too,” Circuit told him. “Just tap the icon down here with the fork and knife on a plate and you’ll be connected to the nearest eatery and they’ll deliver it right to you.”
“That’s amazing!” said Luke with delight and increased hunger by the evidence of drool dripping down his maw. “I gotta go try this out!” Hurrying back to his room, Luke put his new Ryu to work.
