The strange coffin structure was set in the center of the room. Positioned on each of the corners were the human magicians. They held their hands out over it and were chanting something under their breath in unison.
Verik looked at Emmaline with a raised eyebrow. “Are they actually doing anything, or is this all the chanting for show?” He asked in their language.
She shrugged. “I don’t know much about human magic, but I believe the chanting helps them concentrate. Right now, they are reaching out to the prisoner, making sure he is still incapacitated before opening up.”
“Is he?”
“Yes. I could tell the instant I laid eyes on the coffin.”
“Then can you tell them to get on with it?” Verik huffed impatiently.
“There magic is much weaker than ours. We don’t want to let them know that while they still have trust issues. Plus, they’re almost done anyways.”
Just a few seconds later, the humans stopped their chanting and laid their hands flat on the lid of the structure. The top shook lightly and a gap appeared down the center. Instantly, the smell of the demon flooded the room, making the wolfen grimace, their tails stiffening and their fur standing up instinctively expecting combat.
The humans slid their fingers into the gap and pulled the structure open, revealing the demon, lying on its back, eyes wide with fear. It was definitely awake, but the only movement besides the occasional blink was the steady rise and fall of his chest while breathing.
The king waved his hand over the structure while looking at Emmaline. “He’s yours. Do what you need to.”
She approached the demon, but she paused as she looked down into it. “There’s a spell on this coffin.” She eyed the magicians questioningly.
“It is simply a security measure in case the demon managed to wake up. It’s just a barrier.” The hooded magician closest to her explained.
“Well, he is sufficiently incapacitated and his condition won’t change for several more hours with the amount of paralytic we gave him. The barrier makes it harder to concentrate. Seeing as it’s completely unnecessary, I would greatly appreciate it if you removed it.”
The magician, frowned back at her, obviously annoyed by the sarcastic tone she used. He turned to look at the King for instruction.
“Do as she says.” He told him.
Nodding silently, robed human began chanting under his breath for a few seconds before looking back at Emmaline, who was already reaching down toward the demon. “It is gone.” He said in his deep emotionless voice.
“Thank you.” Emmaline placed her hands on both sides of the demon’s head and closed her eyes. “Here I go. No matter what, do not interrupt me, even if it starts to look bad.”

The world began to fade away from around her as she concentrated. This sensation was beginning to be very familiar recently. All the sounds faded away along with the strong scent of those in the room. She was now ready.
Scanning the area around her, she could see the small flames that resembled the life of everyone within her mind’s reach floating in the blackness. It didn’t take long to distinguish the demon from all of them. It was a much darker color than the others, but it was also very erratic in its movements. Seeing it next to the others, she could easily see that this creature was much different than the others. No, different was the wrong word. They were all…insane. Something was seriously wrong with them. What it was, she didn’t know, but that wasn’t important. She needed to find Syla and Thorren.
She reached out her arm and touched the flame. Instantly, area exploded in blinding light. Thousands and thousands more flames appeared all around her, every one of them dark and erratic, and all of them connected.
Emmaline’s body instantly went cold as she stared at them all. There were so many of them. She knew there were a lot of them, but she never imagined that there would be this many. They outnumbered them significantly, even if all the commoners in the city fought against them. There was no way they would be able to win this battle alone.
There were so many thoughts flowing freely between all of them, there was no way she would be able to be able to pick out what she needed. It was like searching for a single bird in an entire forest. She was impressed that the demons were even able to function with all that information in their heads constantly. It almost made her jealous.
She would have to find another way of locating the prisoners. Maybe if she cut the mental link of an individual, took over their mind, and then found them using its memory. It could work, provided they have a decent memory. She scanned the sea of lights and found one of them that as a little more isolated than the others. That is the one she will use.
The demon’s light remained unchanged as Emmaline approached it. She was glad they were only telepathic among each other. This whole task would have been much more difficult if they were not.
She hesitated for a second while staring at the flame. What she was going to do, she had only done once in her life and that was with a squirrel that was running around here human caretaker’s cottage. She had grown much stronger since then in her abilities, but still, this demon will put up much more of a fight than a squirrel.
If this went wrong, it could have some serious consequences. If she lost this battle, who knows what would happen to her mind. Hopefully she wouldn’t have to find out. And without hesitating any more, she moved forward into the center of the flame.
Once she was inside, she found herself standing in on a large, flat stone surface that spread out as far as her eye could see. The sky was a dark grey with no clouds, sun, or moon. It was just blank. So, this was the demon’s mental battleground. It was about what she was expecting.
The sound of claws scratching stone sounded from behind her. She turned her head and saw the demon who’s mind she was invading standing dumbstruck, looking all around him.
“What the hell is this? Where are they others?” He snarled fearfully and confused. Then, noticing Emmaline standing there, his eyes narrowed and immediately grabbed the spear from his back and pointed it at her. “Who are you and what did you do to me?”
She simply turned around, maintaining a cool and composed demeanor in an attempt to make him nervous. “My name is Emmaline. You captured and tortured my friends, and for that I’m going to kill you.” Liftin up her clawed hand and bared her teeth, she began walking towards him.
The demon’s eyes went wide as he took a step back and hurled his spear at her skillfully. It, flew towards her, heading right for her heart, but she knew exactly what he was going to do several seconds before he threw it and swiftly stepped to the side and snatched it out of the air. In one quick motion, she snapped it in half and threw the pieces to the side.
“There, now we can have a fair fight.” She smirked and then, without warning sprinted full speed towards the demon. In response, the demon shrieked jumped into the air, trying to fly away, but he was too slow. Emmaline reached up and sank her claws into his leg and pulled him down.
He was thrown to the ground on top of his right wing and it snapped with a sickening crunch. He opened his mouth the scream in pain, but Emmaline was already on top of him, her hand closing hard around his neck.
She leaned in close and hissed into his ear, “I was expecting more from you. Even the squirrel wasn’t this easy to defeat.” Before giving him a chance to retaliate, she shoved her hand into him as hard as she could, completely crushing his neck.
She got off him and took a step back as he trashed around on the ground, unable to breath. A short while later, his struggling stopped and his body began to dissipate into a thick mist that spread all around her. It was so dense that she couldn’t see her shoulder looking when looking down.
Dizziness flooded over her and she felt like she was lifted from the ground. The feeling was unsettling, but it was familiar, so she relaxed her body and waited for it to be over. Within a few seconds, the mist started to clear up and through it, she could see tall cave walls. And her body was now covered in black scales which caused her to shudder uncomfortably.
Her mind was still spinning as it was flooded with strange memories. Memories belonging to the demon. All the memories since the day he was born surfaced in her mind, causing feelings of sadness, anger, and other unpleasant emotions. Pushing the far memories to the back of her mind, she searched for what she needed.
She recalled the cave she was in, the current residence of the demon army. She remembered most the turns, caverns, all the areas used for various purposes. It was all fuzzy, but she could probably find her way around if she needed to. She thought hard, trying to remember the location of the prisoners. They were in the far side of the cave, through the barracks.
She went over the layout several times, making sure she had it memorized the best she could before she returned to her own body. She was interrupted by a high-pitched hissing voice, “What are you doing here?” It demanded in a furious tone. Opening her eyes, she saw another demon had snuck up on her and had his large spear just inches from her neck.
“Don’t worry, I was just leaving.” She said and then retreated from the demon’s body.
The world around her blinked away and was replaced with the human room and the large coffin-like object. She gasped harshly, still a little disoriented from the whole experience. Verik’s hand appeared on her arm and he asked her something, but she ignored him. “I need ink and paper now!” She commanded to whoever was listening.
One of the humans with the king quickly placed a small table next to her and set an ink bottle with a pen and paper on top. Without saying a word, she picked out the pen, tossed aside and then used her claw to dip it in the ink and start drawing on the paper.
Everybody was silent as they watched her work. Within a couple minutes, she finished and stepped back. “All the demons are in a large cave to the northeast of this city. It’s rough and probably missing a few passageways, but this is a map of that cave.” She gestured to the drawing on the table. She dipped her claw in the ink one more time and made a circle on one of the caverns at the end of the map. “And this is where they are holding our packmates.”
