Glados is a Solifugae, also known as a camel spider, wind scorpion or a sun spider. These guys are native to where I live here in Arizona, they are super aggressive and fast. She is a female that I found one day on my way home from work. The males are much more slim.
It is really fascinating to observe these guys. They are definitely a look and absolutely do not try to touch kind of creature. She is almost never out during the day but when she is out she is always moving about (usually digging or waiting in ambush someplace). One thing that I adore about them is when they are digging burrows, they use their massive chelicerae to push large masses of dirt and rocks. Almost like a little angry dump truck. Another thing that I did not know until examining Glados is that they have a rather long white tongue that they use to help pull meat out of prey. I feed her the mealworms that I use for my tarantula and feeding her is quite a thing to watch. I also believe that they do not make a singular hide, from the looks of it Solifugid create new burrows daily. As every day I go to look at her tank the dirt is moved and shifted in a different way almost every time.
I look forward to looking at more of the strange behaviors of this silly little angry potato.
