"Flagship Detroit" is a 1937 Douglas DC-3B. The 21st DC-3 obtained by American Airlines, delivered 80 years ago on March 2, 1937. Powered by two Wright R-1820 Cyclone-9 radials, the aircraft was purchased in 2004 after being discovered in Virginia by the Flagship Detroit Foundation in August 2004 where she continues to fly giving members of the organization rides.
An interesting tidbit about this aircraft was that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt flew on this plane multiple times- being the last to board, and the first to disembark. It was a completely different era, a golden age that we will never see again.
