I like that game.

I've never really played Dig Dug. I've played the NES Dig Dug 2, which I think is a completely different game.

I like this design better, just helps convey a more pleasing sense of size

I like the title screen Fygar design. It's more fitting for the creature.

Armless dragons look weird to me. I know there's wyverns, but as much as I like pumping up fygars in the game, their sprites aren't the best detailed ones. I prefer the title screen version!

Yeah, I've had a bunch of people also say that. Anatomically it's more likely, but just feels weird. I have a few (very silly) sketches of the other design of fygar with arms that I might do something with, but I'm personally not a fan of the armless version either.

He's a very simple character on the original so there's a lot of play in the design and ability to project your own design.

Yeah, I draw to many unwilling inflatees; thought I should change it up.

I've always been partial to the ones resembling their in game sprites most. though I often draw them myself, people have wanted me to start drawing them with arms.

as for why? not sure to be honest, i've seen that version more and as such I have been more familiar with it. I draw fygars often mostly for cathartics drawing when I just want something simple and bottom heavy to inflate.

Yeah this was just to make me feel better; I was in a bad mood from an art standpoint and just wanted to draw something simple (which is why I kept the coloring almost strictly to the game's palette). I wanted something simple to draw and this felt appropriate. I actually drew both, but liked the title screen design better. Also while drawing, I had your animated gif on fygar sitting on the side to keep me motivated; it's really cute.

(Yeah fine. Frygar with arms, otherwise the inflation looks a little weird. But again, there are always exceptions, depending on the artist.)

Wow, that's a deep cut. I've never seen that character before, but doing some research I see it's actually from a ticket arcade game called Belly-Bomber (then later added into Dig Dug in a special version), and as far as I can find has one piece of fan art. Probably should fix that.

As for the inflation art, now that you point it out I do see two things. First off the inflation has weight to it, as if he was filled with a liquid rather than a gas; it's fine that's what I was in the mood for, but given the theme of dig dug is a bit odd. Second, the swoop in on the left side is asymetrical and probably should be smoothed out.

Your fygar here looks fine. Air sometimes has weight to it if there's enough pressure. OR they could be filling him with an underground reserve of water to cool off in this hot summer weather.
