One of my favorite television shows of my youth was the Sid & Marty Krofft production, Land of the Lost. The odd mixture of a family fallen through a space-time warp, tribal people, dinosaurs, very tall lizard men of dubious marksmenship, and easily disturbed, mysterious obelisks that seemingly control the whole thing made for a very memorable experience. One of the most memorable aspects was an ancestor of the tall lizard men or Sleestak, a traveller from the past of the Land of the Lost stuck in a barbaric future, Enik the Altrusian.
Created by Walter Koenig (AKA Star Trek's Pavel Chekov) when he wrote the episode 'The Stranger', Enik was protrayed and voiced from within the reptilian/insectiod mask by actor/voice talent Walker Edmiston (already a veteran of other Krofft productions) in a calm measured tone that I only recently discovered was done to keep Mr. Edmiston's voice clearly audible and to keep it from reverberating inside the mask.
I've had the entire series on DVD for a few years and have watched it a couple of times. After the advertising surrounding the recent film release and my cable malfunctioning during my vacation, I got the DVDs out to listen to the various commentary tracks that I hadn't done before and found all sorts of things I didn't know about the program including how involved in the show Mr. Edmiston was beyond his role as Enik. Regardless of all that, I'll probably still remember him as Enik first and foremost.

I wanted to see it but I just can't for the life of me manage to stand Will Ferrell even if I could have afforded to see it. Then I found out that while Enik is in the film, he more resembles an anthropomorphic blowfish than than his classic appearance. If they'd only treated the material the way it had orignially been story-wise, then finally the effects could have matched the quality of the vision of the original. Now instead of having a good story with (by today's standards) bad special effects, we end up witha bad story with good effects instead.
I heard the film was just toilet humour through and through. They didn't get any of the characters right, either. Basically a goofball film that appealed to the absolute lowest common denominator.
I saw the preview when I saw Watchmen, and not a single person in the audience laughed. I knew then that this movie would bomb. Between this, the Akira live action film being canceled (thank god) and The Day the Earth Stood Still remake with Keanu Reeves (WTF?) bombing, I'm laughing at Hollywood's poor attempts to cash in on remakes. Take that, Hollywood!

I am sooo glad someone totally talked me out of seeing that Day the Earth Stood Still remake. I love the original and when I found out how the story had been changed in the new version, well it practically turned my stomach. And watching the trailer with Will Ferrel doing all the stuff they had him do, that was pretty damn painful too. Someone was making a live action Akira?
Yeah, Leonardo DiCaprio was going to produce a two-part live action Akira movie. He got some short film director who had never made a movie to sign on, and then he backed out and the production died. I say good. Akira is a milestone of a manga and anime and it would never work in live action.
Now if Spielberg would NOT make an English remake of Old Boy, I'd be even happier...he already ruined Transformers.

You mentioned that they didn't get the characters right? In doing some research to find a link to information about Enik for a comment below, I found out that the filmmakers made Enik the villian of the film. WTF? I am so terribly glad I didn't go to the movie now and won't ever be seeing it. At the very least, I wanted to rent the DVD but won't now. Thank god JJ Abrams didn't muck it up with Star Trek.
He only ended up writing the one but David Gerrold, writer of 'The Trouble with Tribbles', managed to get some other writing talent thanks to his job as story editor on the show. He had the likes of sci-fi authors Larry Niven and Ben Bova and Star Trek story editor D.C. Fontana to contribute. Not bad for a Saturday morning show, eh?
Are they seriously changing the name to syfy?

I tend to avoid such conventions of the internet but WTF?
That's just...I don't even have words for it. It's kind of the same feeling when I see live-action junk on Cartoon Network. Honestly, when it comes to that channel, I wish they'd just ditch the new crap and show what they do on Boomerang instead. I guess all those guys that have been losing jobs screwing up places like the banks and Bear Stearns are getting jobs working as execs at these broadcasting companies.

we dont watch the live action crap on the toon networks
its badly made
lacks humor
i fail to see where it even belongs on the cartoon network (a few of the newer cartoons dont even belong on the air their quality is so poor)
but this definitely doesnt bode well for the scifi channel

Thanks cyberhorn. This was an exercise of sorts to get me back into the feel for shading. I'd been trying with a commission but had to put it aside because I was afraid of ruining it. I wouldn't feel so bad if I had messed this one up. It'd be easier to start over again than with the commission.
Enik was a fantastic character and the writing was top notch.
Unfortunatly, the remake of LotL as a TV series was really hit and miss. Some episodes were good, but many things just weren't, such as the only Sleestaks were three criminals exiled from the rest of them and Tasha and Stink were just a joke...

Huh.. I never noticed this before...
"Enik" is an anagram of "Enki," which in Sumerian mythology, was one of the gods that came to Earth and assisted humanity.
Ironically, those gods, including Enki, are smack dab in the center of the so-called "reptilian" theory, about the beings who supposedly came to Earth eons ago and gave mankind knowledge. The word given to them by the people then is "Annunaki," which means something along the lines of "those who came to Earth from Heaven."
The funniest thing about this is the description people who have supposedly seen them give:

And an ancient statue:

Long comment, I know, but I can't help point out this kind of thing. I think it's funny.

The way this Enik got his name came from a writing technique used by Walter Koenig filtered through an editorial decision by David Gerrold. In the script by Koenig, Enik was originally Eneg, or bascially Gene, specifically Gene Roddenberry, spelled backwards. However, Mr. Gerrold as the story editor felt the homage was a bit too recognizable, so he altered the name to Enik, which is actually the Greek word for film, kine, spelled backwards. This was actually mentioned in the commentaries I watched on the DVDs.
I wonder if perhaps they were somehow subconciously influenced by your explanation though. Sometimes creative types aren't aware of just where all of their influences come from.

Here's a link with more information about the character. Perhaps you've seen the show or something related to it.

Very nice.
I recorded all the shows a few weeks ago on the sci fi channel. I only got to see a few of them. So I wanted to see them all.
Was surprised how often the story lines did not even match with other ones they did. Seemed like that last season was the worse for that and the show kinda went down hill.
And your right, Will F. to do this remake? How stupid was that really? Hollywood is so clueless as to what is really good and what is not anymore.

According to David Gerrold, writer of the original Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" and the story editor for the first season of Land of the Lost, the storylines were never meant to truly match together. That way anyone could see the episodes in almost any order aside from the first and last. The decline in quality was probably due to Mr. Gerrold not being story editor for the other seasons, especially the final. As for Mr. Ferrell and the whole misbegotten idea to rework the story the way it is in the film, I can only groan, shake my head and stick with the DVDs I already have.
Well that makes sense as you could see any of them and be ok. And the first season was good at being true to the basic of the story lines. I just do not like any story that the basics change.
Like Beware of the sleestak. A few later we found out how they got there name and why. Then later on the sleestak themselves was calling them that. Kinda like on StarGate A.
The ships that the hives had in them was called darts. The human team came up with that. Then later on everyone started calling them that like it was there name all along.
Which having many writers it is hard to remember this or that.
