Finished JUST in time for Anthrocon!
I've been wanting to do a painting in the style of an Advanced Dungeons & Dragons cover (that's 2nd Ed, or AD&D to you fellow nerds) for ages. Some of you might even remember a certain rogue stealing a certain big red gem in one of the old illustrations. This needed to be done with a fox rogue, I decided.
This is easily the biggest thing I've ever painted, and I'm. . . fairly happy with it, considering the struggle it took to get it done. Definitely would like to work on my lighting more, but with acrylic paint, I'm still learning the medium. Still, overall working on this was a great experience, and I hope it goes home with someone who loves tabletop games as much as I do :) Or y'know, just loves foxes, or dragons, or what have you.
This painting will be in the 2017 Anthrocon Art Show!

SQEEEEEEEEEE
Finally Smaug like he should have been, thank you *happysigh*
Looks like our thief made the mistake of climbing out of the dragon's lair in front of the dragon. That would give the dragon a significant bonus on his perception ckeck in my book.
Aaand it looks like you learned how to 'cheat' at drawing a huge pile of coins faster than Larry Elmore. At his first picture he drew each and every single coin. At later pictures he learned to 'cheat', i.e. make it look like a huge pile of coins without having to draw every single one.

Taking into account that's a red dragon, I'm sorry to say that the poor fox is boned as soon as the dragon wakes up and takes a glance at his/her hoard. As per the Draconomicon manual:
"Red dragons are the most obsessive treasure collectors among the true dragons. They covet absolutely anything of monetary value and often can judge a bauble's worth to within a copper piece with just a glance. Every red dragon knows the exact value of items in its hoard, along with exactly how and when the dragon obtained the item and each item's exact location in the hoard. Bards tell tales of sneak thieves who ignite a red dragon's wrath just by stealing a single trinket."

LOL yes I do remember that I used to have it as well as the original basic :) I'm going to show my age but I actually bought it in person at the mall from a store called the game peddler hehe. The thieves were cutting the ruby out of a demon shrine with a dagger. and it was the art on the cover of the hard back players hand book if I'm not mistaken.
Hey Rukis,
I'm really glad you got this done in time for Anthrocon. It was my first time at one and getting to meet you was awesome. Your work is really great and I will always treasure this piece. I can not wait to see what you bring next year and I hope you make more DnD themed furry paintings.
