Started playing late Beta/early revised edition (1993) and stopped when Masquerade came out (1998 I think?) so I'm kinda rusted on how things are right now. Thing is: M:TG became kinda too "soft" for me because they nerfed many mechanics to the ground and banned many cards that were fun to play (my poor lotus petals ... :<)
Well its a question of what constitutes as a "nerf", because there are no meaningful erratas on cards and they simply dont print keywords like "storm" or "phasing" on cards due to their limited design space and/or overall brokenness. Also, banlists have been changed a lot. Lotus Petal is only restricted in Vintage.
I wasnt around to experience mana burn, though having it still be around wouldnt really do anything for the competitive scenarios outside of very niche decks built around it.
