Well, that gesture is what us Brits used towards the French in the Dark ages to say "Hey, I still have my draw fingers bitch!", as the French used to cut the fore and middle finger off archers to prevent them from using a bow. The middle finger on the other hand was to suggest that someone went through that torture technique, but managed not to get their middle finger cut off.
