I was only a couple inches away. I even moved a blade of grass that was next to her out of the way. She was quite docile.

Oh that is nice, I remember once seeing one in back yard but she was alittle violent I saw her actually chase after me for a few inches I didn't step on her or anything just sorta jumped back and walked off to my house. It was sorta cute but my I sorta freaked when i bent down to see her back was covered in babies.

Isn't it intimidating when something so small wants to take you on? They're not dangerous but I think some part of our brain is like "this thing is tiny why is it coming for me IT MUST BE ABLE TO FUCK ME UP D: D: D:"

One of her eyes seems to be discolored; is it because you used a flash or do you think she might be blind or what?

That's either my flash or the flashlight reflecting off her eye shine (much like a dog's or cat's eyes reflect light).

That's how I find them at night.

A spider is creepy... a spider crawling with other spiders just takes it to the next level.

That said, wolf spiders aren't so frightening, especially up close. Quite a find, that... I've never seen this particular phenomena myself.

I've been wanting to find a mother wolf spider for some time. I've found them carrying their egg cases, but never hatched like this. Once I found a way to reliably find wolf spiders at night, it became much easier. :)

Wow, very nicely done, Queue! Of the three photos, I think this one is the best, it shows a goodly amount of detail, without getting so close that you have to figure out what you're looking at. Depth of field is decent, and the lighting is not bad, especially for up that close. Good job all the way around!

The lighting is a big challenge in that this was taken at night, with my head mounted LED and flash the only light source. Might post a couple more angles of her later.

Wow, then you did a HECK of a good job right there! Have you considered looking into a ring-light for your macro lens? It might really help if you do a lot of close-up work.

Ive looked into it, but I'm thinking of going with a standard flash unit mounted with a bracket and off camera cable.

The off-camera flash will do a lot better for general-purpose photography, especially in that you can get it off axis and use indirect lighting. For macro shots, a ring light will really do better, though. Even with an offboard, you are still probably going to have issues lighting across your whole photo smoothly with only a single source.

You might be surprised with what you can do without a ring light.

Oh, I've done a fair bit of night shooting myself, I have a little wooden crescent that I have four LED flashlights mounted on that I set up on a mini-tripod to add enough light for a goof shot.

So, how big was she? I know wolf spiders can get pretty darn big. I've seen some around here with a 4 inch leg span.

Her legspan was maybe around an inch. Pretty average.

I guess they grow 'em big in Colorado.

Largest wolf spider in the US is the Carolina Wolf Spider, which has a wide range. You might have seen one of them, unless it wasn't a wolf spider.

Ok, yeah..now THAT is cool. Reminds me of this little black and white jumping spider who I put outside since I didn't want the thing to get smashed by my arachnophobic mom.

Over in Australia there are spiders big enough that you don't need to take a macro shot of them to see the detail.

We have some very large spiders here as well.

I remember seeing a little spider dart out of a crack for a dead fly. ._. little bugger grabed it then just skitered back into the crack. it was trippy.

Her eyes are like tiny jewels! So pretty, this spider. Just wish the little ones that live by the thousands around here would stop biting me... We had a "pet" black widow living in a pipe in the wall near my husband's car for a little while. We took some pix (I'll upload 'em but they're not as good as yours by a long shot), so folks can see how lovely she is. She disappeared recently- I hope she's ok.

Their eyes are like emeralds in the grass when I shine my headlamp over them.

That's just NEAT... I never knew a spider's eyes could refract like that- so pretty.

It doesn't happen with all spiders. But it does happen with wolf spiders and nursery web spiders. It helps their night time vision.

Oooh. Well, I'm pretty sure there are wolf-spiders in my current area, but I'm not familiar with Nursery-web spiders... *goes to look 'em up*

This is an absolutely stunning photo. I love the way her hairs (but...they're not hairs, right? spines? It's been a while since I've watched a documentary that involved spiders) really catch the light.

The carrying of the baby spiders reminds me a little bit of this one part in half life 2 where I die every single friggin' time, but this is much much less scary. And more beautiful to boot :)
