I'm pretty happy with this. You've managed to create a bad guy who's malice and capability lives up to your design for him/it.
As for requiring a deus ex machina to get out of this scrape: a) LOL, this is a fantasy, of course there's going to be a deus ex machina, and b) you've already met her.
