DOS game veterans will recognise that this is based on "Prince of Persia" - not the modern ones, but the story of the classic first two in the series. Ages ago when it was released, the first game genuinely scared me, especially at the part when the mirror appeared - the infamous mirror room in Silent Hill 3 has nothing on that part. Years later, I'm still trying to beat it in even faster times than before, and my current record is just under 18 minutes from start to finish.
This sounds quite different from many of my other songs, with a different pace and an attempt at some Arabian-style melodies, particularly at the start and end. The introduction incorporates the theme from the beginning of "The Shadow and the Flame" itself. At the very end, I couldn't resist including a brief section resembling the guitar part of Gamma Ray's "The Winged Horse", as that song reminded me so much of what this is based on.

[Lyrics]
A prince from an ancient city, far across the sand
I am the lone survivor, my father's sword in my hand
Reaching the crest of a dune, I look up to the skies
Another Arabian night before my eyes
Climb the tower, your princess awaits
To save her from the tyrant and yourself from your fate
Nothing left to lose, but so much to gain
When you're guided by your spirits, the shadow and the flame
Eleven days after escaping, the war seemed to be won
The banished magician took power, my task is not yet done
Lost in the desert alone, so far away from home
But I will return and I will reclaim my throne
Climb the tower, your princess awaits
To save her from the tyrant and yourself from your fate
Nothing left to lose, but so much to gain
When you're guided by your spirits, the shadow and the flame
Known to no one, scorned by all, but I will rise again
Guarded by the powers of the shadow and the flame
Climb the tower, your princess awaits
To save her from the tyrant and yourself from your fate
Nothing left to lose, but so much to gain
When you're guided by your spirits, the shadow and the flame
The shadow and the flame
The shadow and the flame
