Upper level is the location of the stamp mill hammers that broke the Gold and Silver bearing Quartz down. Once it was busted to much smaller chunks the metal was separated first using Mercury and then extracted by the mine crews.
It ran on coal fired steam engines which turned belt drive equipment (you can see the belt drive sections in the photo). It ran 24 hours a day.
