"For us Americans: Happy Independence Day! For everyone else: Happy I-Still-Get-To-Relax-And-Watch-Fireworks-Anyway Day!"
See? I told you all I can do nice things for Argent every now and then.
"Wasn't the nice thing going to be me on a beach or something?"
A nice grassy field on the fourth of July counts as "or something." You were originally going to be cloudwatching on a beach; I realized today was the fourth and changed the setting accordingly. No sense in doing essentially the same picture twice. Sorry about that.
"I'm not complaining. This is nice."
That's good to hear.
"So... I guess we'll be going right back to business as usual once this is over?"
In a few days, yes. I wouldn't want to rush us.
Honestly, I don't give a damn about patriotism and all that. It's hard to be patriotic when a man like Donald Trump is running things, and I'm not afraid to admit that because we still at least have the right to free speech. But that's beside the point.
I live in northern New Mexico. As a general principle, there's so much danger of someone starting a fire that fireworks are basically contraband. We still get a large firework show each year, but that's only because the county government sponsors it. For a while, though, the fire danger was so far through the roof that it looked like they wouldn't even allow that. I'm told that it's low enough today that it'll be fine, so that's nice. But anyway, the point I'm trying to get at is that Argent doesn't have to follow those rules. I can make/let Argent do whatever I/she wants.
(Sometimes it's hard to tell who's really running the show here. It feels more and more like Argent has as much a say in what happens to her as I do, despite her not technically existing in the real world. Is that good? I think that's good.)
Doing this picture has taught me four things about my own artistic ability.
1. I'm getting noticeably faster, especially at sketching.
2. Certain simple backgrounds are not totally out of the realm of possibility. (Forgotten Flame's epilogue suggested this, but this picture confirmed it.)
3. My style is coming off as somewhat juvenile, at least to me. It looks like something you'd expect to have been drawn by a kid, not a 21-year-old computer science major, and I don't know how to fix that or even if it actually needs fixing.
4. I have NO F***ING IDEA how to do shading. I know I tried it in previous pictures but it looked ugly then and I couldn't figure out how to do it at all now.
I made a brighter version, if anyone wants it. It's in my scraps.
