Ness has no soul. Some would argue he is the hero of Earthbound, but I beg to differ. I've played Earthbound, and he really doesn't do anything heroic other than rescue the REAL hero of the game, Paula. Besides that, he is akin to oxen in the Oregon Trail. He carries the party, because his lack of a soul apparently allows him to not be one-shotted by every enemy in the game.
Earthbound fans argue that Ness is the strongest canonically powerful character in SSB, because he defeated the purest form of evil. In reality, Ness doesn't do crap to Gigyas; he simply keeps (robot)Paula alive until she can pray for my help and I defeat Gigyas. In the end, Ness can't even stop his fatass neighbor from escaping.
Cue people taking me way too seriously in 5...4...3...2...

Whoops.
Lol the sad thing is it's true. Paula's the one who actually defeats Giygas. Ness' job was just to be strong enough to actually protect her while she did it. Poo and Jeff were just meat shields to help rake anything else away. I suppose that's why they're the chosen four instead of just ness being the chosen one, when really, he's just a tank. Either way, I think it's better this way. Also, much lulz were had in the making of this comment.

True. I was super disappointed at the end of the game when you defeated the boss by PRAYING. I was too thick-headed to try praying the first time I fought Giygas, and I fought him for over an hour (I had been grinding for most of the game, so I was beefy enough to fight him to a standstill) before I gave up. When I finally figured out what I was supposed to do, I was overcome by the lameness of the notion, so I'm inclined to agree with you.

This feels like a fun time to start saying "THE TRUTH HURTS"(I'll totally admit once I get onto something I become a horribly blunt, cold person sometimes. Sorry 'bout that). Actually, you know what? Maybe Ness does have a soul. I seem to recall him being my beast of burden for a lot of the game, but sometimes he'd turn into this useless lump of wasted space BECAUSE HE MISSES HIS MOMMY. There has to be some humanity in that, right?
Really, it's only because 'Bound attempts to copy Link(non-Wind Waker versions) and have Ness represent the player(I'm assuming), except they throw it out the window when they actually include the player himself in-game. So he just ends up seeming like an emotionless stump for the rest of the game. Try to picture having a friend who never speaks a word, never blinks, and has a permanent smile on his face...Also his father is a telephone. That's probably where he gets it.
Truth is made out of poison ivy.

Well damn. I never really thought of it like that... I hate to ask but how did you come to this conclusion about Ness? Before I thought he was a pretty cool guy for dealing with all the RPG bullshit but now... Now it's like he was a robot ever since the beginning... BEEP BOOP BOP.
Well at least Mother 3 wasn't to bad with it's main character... and in truth I think it's the best one out of the three.
Also if Poison ivy is the truth what is Lie? I thinking it's a ginseng bush or something.

At least Ness gets to be a robot in an awesome hat. Lucas was handled a little better, but I still liked pretty much everyone else more than him...And I'll always like Ness more in Smash Bros. Lucas can hit the road and let a REAL Scout get to work.
I'm trying to not think about what lies are made of, because I think I'd be making an extremely convoluted Portal joke, and I swore I'd never do that.

True and robots are pretty awesome. Lucas was handled a lot better if you ask me... but you are right, you tend to like the other characters a bit more. (Especially Kumatora and Flint) Smash bros. though... I wouldn't know, I am not an avid user of Ness and Lucas (I usually use Ice climbers, Kirby, Link, Meta knight (sue me) and Bowser) so you'll win on that argument.
People swear a lot of things. It's only a matter of time till you crack a joke about it and break you're swear.
