why is this a deus ex machina?

isn't Deus ex Machina a force that interferes to change the inevitable outcome (ie. heroes dieing) and the force itself is something beyond the control of heroes? Back in the day it was literal gods but nowadays it might be the power of love, or a mcguffin, or the spark, or whatever this ring might be. at least this is my assumption which might be very wrong.

Deus ex Machina was a convention in Greek and Roman Theatre where a God would come in and Fix everyone's problems because things were so convoluted. (Possibly this was their version of 'It's a Fair cop' and ending a skit)

The RING was useless to him before. He went on a quest to find its origins, and its Maker/Operator reactivated and tuned it to him. This is less something he has no control over as something he earned coming in to save him at the right moment.

Yes congratulations you can find a definition on google. also over the years phrase "Deus ex Machina" changed in meaning to reflect change in the way plays were written. Deus or "god" was changed to mean force beyond mortal control (or beyond the control of characters in the play) that interferes with natural sequence of events Or as Pokkuti mentioned, A contrived/unexplained item/character/power that saves the day is never mentioned before or after when it comes into play. I knew it can be seen that way so I tried to avoid it, but I wanted to make a joke about Lord of the rings and now I feel like I'm explaining a joke no one is having a good time which is what I wanted in the first place.
