A few years back, I ran into a fellow from Madrid who was trying to find a Hartford business. He spoke fluent Spanish (of course) and also French and German. Not a word of English, so naturally his boss chose him for a trip to the U.S. Because, you know, Americans all speak Spanish. The phrase book he'd bought was junk. Fortunately, I took five years of Spanish and dated a Mexican girl in the past, and the place he was looking for was in my building, so I got him where he was going.

I can stumble in Spanish as I took a few years of it in higschool and I live in Los angeles, but I am by no means fluent

Nor am I anything approaching fluent, (and even the relationship with the Girl from Guadalajara is thirty years in the rear-view mirror), but I could figure out who he was looking for. And show him where to get a kickin' breakfast!
