It might be seen as rude but isn't it the most formal thing you could do? You accept the gift because it was a gift but at the same time you tell the person you don't exactly enjoy it so they won't waste their time/money on something they dislike. Like I think it is more rude to not tell someone that you dislike something because you would just be wasting their time at that point. You can completely enjoy the gift without enjoying the item itself. Like honestly there isn't really a right way of doing such, just a way to make it slightly less painful for the gift giver.

Alternately he could legit hate it but still want it anyway. I hate fruitcake but still find myself eating it at least once a year anyway to remind myself how much I hate it. More comical if you look at it that way with the comic.
