So I took the nearly unprecedented step of staying away from the internet last night, got a bit of rest and watched Return of the Jedi for the first time since my father died at the end of January 2007. It felt almost like returning home. Aside from family members, I've had most other people - friends and coworkers alike- in my life come and go and even lost some family members but thanks to video and DVD, I can always spend time with these characters. So it's not the same thing as real 3D people but it beats the heck out of nothing. Anyway, while watching the movie, I had this idea and managed to sketching it surprisingly quickly this morning.

That is an incredible picture. I really can understand your feelings about the emotional ties with films. As with many of your pictures, there's a certain detail which jumps out at me. In this case, it's the storm trooper, for some reason. Just casually leaning on the back of the couch, hangin' out. Somehow, that's the magic key for me. There's a lot of depth to this, and I really like it.
Thank you. The first Star Wars came out at what I'd consider a critical time in my life. My parents were beginning their divorce proceedings which I really didn't understand at the time and things were bad at home. Going to see Star Wars at the theater was one of the few things they actually did together with my brother and I in those days and the film itself was practically magical, odd I know given the technology in the films but you had to live at that time to understand how profoundly different a movie it was back then and I've stuck with Lucas and the saga ever since. I know other people feel let down and betrayed in light of recent developments concerning the saga but I don't. As a fellow creator, I see it as Mr. Lucas's right to do with it as he pleases and I just happen to enjoy what he's done and thank him for having the perseverance to see his story through his way and for sharing it with us. And I like how that stormtrooper turned out too.
