When I was younger, I had video cassettes of Pokemon episodes, and at the end of them all there were always anime trailers that would play at the end. One of them was for a film called The Dog of Flanders, which was based on a Japanese television series of the same name that ran from 1992 to 1993, and was adapted from an 1872 novel by Marie Louise de la Ramée. The film follows a young artist, Nello, and his dog, Patrasche, and the tragedy that ensues on their lives. I knew next to nothing about the film other than what I had seen from the trailer for the majority of my childhood. It wasn't until early 2010 that I thought about the trailer and decided to look for the movie on the internet. Sure enough, I found the full movie online and decided to watch it alone. Before this film, I was a pretty cynical kid. I never took other people's feelings into consideration. While I could love the people I cared about, I didn't connect with people emotionally. By the time I had finished watching this film, I was hyperventilating from crying so much, and was so inspired by this movie that I vowed to become a better person. I don't know if this film was really about staying honest and good of heart, but that's what I got out of it back then and I look at this film as the film that changed my life. After 6-7 years, I have not rewatched this film in it's entirety, for I've never had the emotional strength to do so.
