Mace grabbed some kind of sea creature that apparnetly exploded on contact with air and dumped it in Grunns lap for getting so drunk he'd sworn off pants.... I'm not entirely sure what that sea creature did but i think it might have temporarily blinded Grunn so he doesn't know who he's got he just knows he;s going to hurt them....
I really need to go through and read /everything/ but it seems Grunn is pretty much stereotyped as the abusive foster parent... im sure there's more to his character than this but..

The sea creature's defensive measure look like it sprays phosphorus into the air, as it combusted the atmosphere around it... as Grunn was staring at it so likely temporarily blinded from the flashbomb effect... unfortunately it was also at Crotch height when it ignited so... Grunn got the equivalent of a fire bomb detonating next to a very sensitive area of his body. So crazed from the burn too probably.
