Any chance this was done (and pre-dated) by a very young D.H.? He was active forty or fifty years later. Rachel Scudder (1776) is a similar example.
Makes sense; IIRC we have discussed newer carvers 'cutting their teeth' on old backlogs. These look fairly simple and usually the children's stones are small, so it would be a good way to build up a business. "That Hastings fellow cut some stones for Dan'l Fisk. Did a respectable job, too."
