Have you ever hiked in the bush in the American Southwest? Lots of burrs and grass seeds. When I went hiking (was dragged along), I tended to wear ww2 Legging to keep the little cholla and burrs from climbing my socks. and sticking me. Friends with dogs and cats are constantly picking grass seeds out of their pet's coats, so for me it was a no brainer for Asheru and co to wear these.
I was a re-enactor. and I have worn Puttees for entire weekends, so they don't hurt. They can be a pain to keep tight and wrapped, but if you have the right technique, they will stay on.. it's basically just a wool or cotton band about 4 inches wide and 6 feet long, and fairly thin, wrapped spirally around. Originally used in India, and then adopted by others. See the reply to
