2017 Best Scary Story Competition (5th Annual)
Well, it's my favorite time of the year. I'm really looking forward to hosting this year's challenge. And I worked my entire Saturday to make this masterpeice of poorly constructed Photoshop layers and shading… I'm dead inside…
So if you are good at, mediocre at, interested in writing horror, spooky, or creepy stories. Then by all means enter…
The More the Scarier…
The 13 Laws of the Challenge
1* Each Writer may only write ONE Story. No making multiple stories or changing entries. So make sure you proofread before you submit. No seriously, *Their* not going to like that you but *There* over *They're*.
2* Writers may start sending in their work now, but must submit their work by the 30th of September. MIDNIGHT (mountain standard time). It will be at that time that all of the stories will be released for viewing at the same time and listed in an entirely random order to avoid popularity from being a factor.
3* The theme of the tale must be “Horror”. It must be a scary story. Any theme after that will be acceptable, but PLEASE, keep it clean. We don't want to traumatize people the wrong way here.
4* Must have at least one Protagonist and ONE CLEAR Antagonist or Issue. None of that Steven King crap where you never see the monster or it’s just a creepy feeling. The antagonist does not have to be another living being, but it can’t just be a total enigma.
5* The Story MUST have at least one TWIST that would fit in with the story itself. It doesn't have to be a big twist, but it is traditional for the genre.
6* Must be less than 10,000 words (or twenty pages with 14point font), be self-contained and have a clear ending. Or at least as clear as any horror story can be.
7* Original Work ONLY. No fanfics. This means absolutely no Worlds or Characters that already exist or belong to another writer. Writers must Create completely new Characters specific for the story they write. This includes things like Dracula, btw.
8* The submissions cannot have pictures of any kind. This includes the Thumbnails and if you'd like to help spread the word about the challenge. You may add them later on, but not for this challenge.
9* The winner will be decided by a point system. 5 points for Each Individual who Comments & 10 points for each “Favorite”, But the total of these points will be transformed into percents and reduced varying upon the amount of Views it receives. In the very rare case of a tie, it will be decided based on all participant’s personal votes. {Of course, this may change as we're trying something new this year.}
10* No Parody, please. As such, entries that begin with “It was a dark and stormy night” or “Imagine if you would…” and the like will not be considered.
11* Stories should be written in English or at least translated into English. It is the language used by the most people around the world. Feel free to post the story in your native tongue after contest winners are decided and announced on Oct 31st.
12* One author per story, no co-authoring. You may bounce around ideas, but each writer is on his, her, or whatever own.
13* Each writer must provide proper URL links to the collection of entries as well as a link of these of Regulations. However, Tricking people into viewing your lone story is not allowed. If caught, you will be disqualified. This includes links to your story from outside sources. This year, we would like all of the stories submitted by Email to [ Nanashichimera[at]aol.com ] so that they may be posted in the same place (Namely as Google Docs) and so that those who don't have an FA account may participate as well. As such (again) no one is allowed to post their submission on other sites until after Halloween.

I think that so long as they'r not a main character, but then again.
So like say a chupacabra is involved. Or say "a mummy". Or "a wolfman"… oh…uh non-furry "wolfman" of course. hehehe…
Anywhoo, Those are fine. It can be that "loose".
If however you want to use Scott McCall, the Pokégods or Loki specifically from the Avengers, or Imotep (from the movies and not the healer from Egyptian mythology/history) then no.
See what I'm saying here?
However, this is to also encourage creativity. If you really want to use a character similar to another then make a character similar to them. I don't know every horror/fantasy character out there… Just most of them…

Got it
Probably would go Japanese mythology, rather then Eygptian however. There's another story I've been playing around with in my head for a while but didn't know how to tell it, but this competition (In particular the Horror theme and the "Must have at least one twist.") Had given me an idea on how to approach it... And wow, I honestly cannot believe how dark my mind went (while staying SFW)

No, it doesn't have to have a happy ending. Check out the other four years of submissions.
I mean submissions like last year's winner Fatality #1: a Tale from Penderghast Academy had ghosts and even a very dramatic death involving (possible) drugs. This was probably the darkest it's ever gotten, if you need something for reference.
All in all, I say go with your gut. If you think it crosses a line, then it might have. All that rule #3 is about is basically avoid anything that you know would get a Mature or Adult rating. Before it was so as many people would have access to your story as possible. Today, I'd say it's a pretty good standard to up keep, at least a little. Even so, it's not so much a rule that will be heavily enforced, but Erotica is Out Of the Question.

Like I said, it's not explicitly forbidden, but if you include enough details that you'd have to call it "gore" then it might be going too far. (And frankly would be dull in my opinion, but that's just my opinion.)
Blood is bound to happen. But there's a clear difference between Saw (gore) and The Shinning(blood).
And some body horror can be fun in my opinion. Frankly, us Furries are notorious for it. Just please no erotica.

the shinning? don't you mean the shining---Oh! Whoops - don't wanna get sued...

I'm sure we can come up with a beter point system. Perhaps, just popluar vote starting from October 1st-24th. Then we could vote amoung ourselves should there be ties and so forth.
Thoughts?

Soooooo. Gahhh.... I'm going to submit mine Monday, but with the god awful schedule I've had these past two months I've had no real time to sit at an actual computer to write it up or properly edit. Everything has been done on my tablet while traveling between places on the bus. And I don't feel comfortable sharing this with my friends to edit because its... really, really, out there...
