Well, many of the symbols on these plates are taken directly from alchemistic and hermetic writings, at least the central ones, which I also try to use according to their respective contexts.
The more marginal ones I sometimes make up (if I need a magical seal filled with symbols or such, for example) - the symbols in the circle of protection on this specific plate here are an exception though, in that they are again directly taken from a magical text from 1849.
But I have no problems to come up with something of my own if the need arises - I just like to give these illustrations a certain air of authenticity.
