The TL;DR version is, my rat is very sick and in the hospital, and the estimate for her now is $2300-3800. I usually have money set aside for pet emergencies, but I just bought a condo and the closing costs DESTROYED my bank account, so I am asking for donations via my Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/nyaasu
But I am also planning on opening commissions soon, so if you would prefer to do that, please do not donate! I would prefer you get something back!
I'll try to make a long story short - my rat Celes has been having respiratory distress issues for about two months now. She's been seeing vets from the very start, but despite us trying every antibiotic I've ever heard of and more (even injections!), she just kept getting worse. She ended up on oxygen at a 24/7 animal hospital about an hour from me last week, and I went in to finally put her to sleep, after hearing from the doctors she was getting even worse. But when I saw she was still eating, I couldn't do it. I've always been told that you give up when an animal stops eating, and so even though I knew I was just prolonging the inevitable, I just couldn't do it. I was very upset and the doctor could see that, so she told me I should leave her overnight so I could think about it, she didn't want to do anything I would regret.
So I left her overnight, and in the morning they called me and told me they'd found an experimental treatment for rats with terrible respiratory infections - a way to nebulize them with Erythromycin, and the doctor wanted to try that. I figured, why not? If I tried it and it didn't work, I'd at least feel that much more certain that putting her to sleep was the right thing to do.
So we tried it, and they called me back the next day to say she'd improved. And the next day even more. And so on.
I went to visit her today, and I honestly don't think she looks much better, but all the vets there unanimously agree that it's working wonders, so I want to keep trying.
The estimate I got today is now $2300-3800. I figured, I can't give up now. I payed the 75% deposit, but if the high estimate is the right one in the end, it will be just more than I have. And I JUST got paid - I won't see another paycheck for two weeks.
So I am asking for donations, as it says above, through my Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/nyaasu
I hope to NEVER have to ask for donations again, this is just a very bad time for me (I had to buy a new (well, used) car AND a new place to live within two months of each other!). And I feel like crap having to, but everyone needs help sometimes, I guess...
BUT! I also plan to open commissions here soon - I am finishing off a set of them that I got on deviantArt (I didn't want to post here and there at the same time about it, I get overwhelmed easily), and once I finish there I will open more here. I don't want to start a "wait list", as it would stress me out (I panic when I have multiple projects to do), so please be patient until I actually open (I also need to get a current commission price guide together!). Also, and this is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT:
DO NOT PAY ME IN ADVANCE FOR COMMISSIONS.
Nothing panics me more than owing someone. I receive payment AFTER I FINISH, ONLY, so please do not pay via ko-fi in advance for a commission.
I'm sorry to make this so long! Short version is, I am accepting donations to help cover my rat's vet bill right now, but later I will be taking commissions towards it. If you have a few dollars to spare that you'd like to donate, I'd appreciate it! (But try not to donate too much! Less than $20, please! Over that, I would rather do a commission for you!) And if you'd rather commission me, I will be trying to open commissions soon.
(If you could spread the word, that would be awesome, too!)
THANK YOU!!!! <3

Question. how old is the rat? is it a young rat or an old rat? older rats can develop respiratory problems in age as well as well if their cage isn't properly maintained IE kept away from drafts humidity etc. I'm sad to say rats don't live forever but.. -shrugs- good luck honestly it would be better to put the poor thing out of its misery tbh.
She's actually on the older side! 2 years and 2 months. Her mother actually died earlier this year of an abscess in her lung, which I found out about (and worked hard to help!) for 5 months prior to her death. I researched online for ways to improve her chances with an abscess, and learned so much about keeping the cage clean (something I already think I did a pretty good job with!) and using the right kind of litter to avoid dust. I wipe the cage down twice per day, and scoop out the poop corner every morning. I change the litter out (eco-bedding) every third day!
But I didn't know about drafts and humidity (well, actually, I knew a little bit about drafts, but not much). The vet actually suggested a humidifier for her mother, so I had been using one - was that a bad idea? I haven't used it in a few months (maybe 3?), and I think my room by default was very dry (it was actually uncomfortably dry in the winter), but it may have gotten humid around the time she got sick, I don't know...
I have had a loooot of rats in my day, with a looooot of respiratory issues (not all! Some never had any at all!) and what's going on with Celes *IS* weird. No part of it acted like a URI I have personally ever seen. I'd almost KILL to know exactly what it is, just because it's all been so weird!
One thing she's done is she horks up blobs of clear or yellowish slime from her mouth. It happens rarely, but when it does, she feels MUCH better right after. The vet took a sample and found YEAST, so we started treating for that towards the end. It did seem to help! But then she got way worse again, which is when she went to the hospital.
I've never seen anything like this one, if you are very good with rats, I can try to explain it, if you think you can help!

hmm.. I have never heart of the yeast thing :O damn that is a new one to me I have had many rats years ago I used to breed em for pets and overall they were pretty healthy despite a few abscesses that were sorted out and the occassional bite wounds from the males hopping into the wrong cage D: but I have never heard of that.
rats when they get older tend to get alot of wierd infections I have noticed my last breeder who passed away after about 4 years Kyrii she had quite a few problems with pneumonia towards the end of her time but over all she was a healthy rat some of it could be just getting older
where do you purchase your rats do you adopt them or..?

I have gotten my rats from any source you can imagine! xD Adopted from shelters, bought from pet stores (both the pet kind and the snake food kind), bought from breeders with pedigrees, and these guys? These guys were born in my house due to a terrible mistake I made...I told my roommate a rat we saw at a pet store was a male, but it was female...and she had males...
So I adopted the mother and the female children from that incident. The mother and one of the fathers were "snake food", and the other father was from PetSmart. There were three female babies, one that looked just like the one father, one that looked just like the other father, and one I'm not sure who's side she comes from. Celes here is the daughter of a snake food albino (from not a very good strain, I would imagine) and a PetSmart pet - probably not the strongest genetics. The father also had an incident with pneumonia that almost killed him, so being susceptible to respiratory issues might be in her blood...
4 years for Kyrii, that's amazing, though! I have only had one rat live for that long...and I think she could have made it even further, believe it or not. but a combination of a benign but large tumor and mites took her out in the end. I never had an issue with mites, but one day I came home and found three male rats in my room - my friend's mom had "seized" them from my friend because she was neglecting them, and I guess my mom told her that I'd take care of them. They had bumblefoot and mites like you wouldn't believe, and before I was able to get rid of the mites, I think they weakened my 4-year old rat ("Ratty"...I know, creative, right?) and she quickly died.
Yeah, apparently yeast is rare to be contributing to a problem like this. So rare that the vet wasn't even going to test for it initially. One of the vets there mentioned it early on, and then a month and a half later I brought that possibility up again, and just because nothing else seemed to be working, the "rat master" vet, as I call him, took some of the Celes slime onto a slide and checked, and there it was!
But they say the yeast is usually a secondary issue - the primary issue we're not quite sure of.
If I had to guess...I'd say it's like the rat master said after finding the yeast - we were successfully fighting the bacterial infections (because she'd get better briefly), but then they'd come back because of the yeast infection. So we fought both at the same time and it seemed to be working, but MY guess is, her lungs have been so worn out and injured from all of this, they might be giving out...
I'll get an update tomorrow and see how it's going!

good luck sweetie I hope things work out <3
Yea I have had issues with petco/petsmart rats my place where I used to get mine which at the time were sold for snake food but I was shocked "snakefood" types lasted 3+ years ;v;
I don't have rats anymore I now share a appartment with my girlfriend and we have 1 cat and a hamster.. and jfc hamsters are adorable but not as loveable as rats D: even if he is a longhaired teddybear D:

Thank you! I hope so too.
Yeah, my 4 year old rat was snake food, too! And the one I had with a pedigree didn't do so well...sometimes, it can all come down to good or bad luck, I think!
Oh!!! We had a longhair teddy bear hamster once! I was surprised by how smart she was. I was under the impression at the time that hamsters weren't too smart, but she sure was!

So, Nyaasu, I know I've said this before, but, maybe you should hold off on pets for a while. You seem to have terrible money luck with them.
Best of luck to you and your rats, though. Sadly I'm stretched way too tight to help right now. :<
PS: But hey, Toy Story in Kingdom Hearts III!

Jay, I think of your words every time this happens! xD Since the last time you've said this (and I agreed!), I have planned to not have any more rats. But these current ones were born in my house, because of an accident I caused, so I'm paying for it. And also, the way I think of it, I'm "going out with a bang", before what I hope will be a calm and peaceful "rat break".
My last set of rats was supposed to be the last! xD This current "generation" is the mother and daughters from the accident I caused. And, I actually looked to re-home the babies, but every home I found for them fell through, and by then they were already a year old, and I didn't want to give someone a half-dead rodent.
I've said it many times, but in the past, I had support from family, a stable place to live, etc, so it was easy to go back on my "wise" decisions.
This time I'm alone, and the rats, while still amazing and I love them, are causing more trouble than ever.
So, this time, I mean it. xD I've always said it, knew it was a good idea, but never meant it, but just before this current generation, I said it and I meant it, but accidents happen.
I love these girls, and each one of them is going to break my heart as they leave, but I'm actually looking forward to my rat-free future. "Life after rats", as I keep calling it in my head. xD I'm enjoying the their company in the meantime, but for the first time ever, I fully understand that I can't have these guys anymore. Not for a while. xD
JAY I LOVE YOU BUT YOU KNOW I WANT TO BE SURPRISED
(Other people already spoiled that one for me though) xD
YOU KNOW WHAT MY FIRST RAT-FREE MISSION WILL BE?!
To go enjoy Disney with you again.
