So a few weeks back, Misty started the project to remove the rotted posts holding up the porch roof as all the weight was setting on the jalousie window frames, Once the temporary wall was in place and we started jacking, it became obvious this was going to be more than just fixing the posts. Removed all the jalousie windows and frames, removed everything up to the rafters and joists and started building new. One small problem is that the roof rafters and joists are 2x4 only, a little less than today's standards but its a small area, and the current wood is Southern yellow pine. You can't drive a nail into it without bending the nail over unless you pre-drill the holes. Not even with the framing nailer. Anyway after measuring the span I built a carrying beam that would span the entire opening, then had an idea, what if I put in 2 sliding doors and removed the center frame to create a 4 panel sliding glass door. It really turned out well, I still have some finishing details but the look is fantastic. Windows were on sale too, only $450 for the pair and maybe 300 for all the lumber and supplies. 16' lumber is easy with a 12' truck. The Lowes lot workers were super helpful in loading up the 2 sliding glass doors, seems they have never loaded stuff on a flatbed, they must just do vans and pickups all day.
