This was during the awards ceremony! We won a "discretionary" award (one of two) -- and honestly, I am still not 100% sure what that meant. Possibly something like all judges agreed that this person/group of people deserved recognition?
We were a hodgepodge group -- the Yondu and the small Star-Lord were father & son and had signed up for the competition before the con even started. I just happened to show up to Sausomecon wearing Rocket. People didn't know me and weren't expecting me. I didn't know what to expect myself -- I was shocked he even bothered to ask me to compete with him and his son. I figured it'd be more special if it was just the two of them together -- I was planning on watching it to cheer them on after I learned they'd be there.
I'm actually really shy, anxious, socially awkward, etc. I am constantly terrified that people are making snide comments about me, laughing at me behind my back, etc. I was doing better as far as being in front of crowds of people went. I did skits at a con with a friend for about 4-5 years in a row, but we haven't done any in several years, so what little confidence I had built up as far as being in front of crowds went had all but diminished. The Yondu sorta picked up on my anxiety & nervousness and asked if I was alright. I had sort of been tuning everything out and staring blankly at the semi-transparent black curtains in front of me, but hearing his concerned voice brought me back and calmed me a bit. I don't know him at all, but it was a blessing meeting him and getting to know him.
We got one trophy; although I was happy to have helped them get an award, I felt I sort of crashed their group. I had planned on telling the Yondu that he and his son could keep the trophy since I felt his son would cherish it more than I would, but he beat me to it, asking if he could keep it for his son. Turns out, the lady handing out awards had another one ready for me the next day, as well as a medal (that the Yondu & his son did not receive, though that was unintentional; the lady was super stressed and she had not meant to not give one to the Yondu & Star-Lord).
I just... ahhh, man. I love this photo, strictly because of the Yondu & Star-Lord. They have such a great father-son relationship. I can tell that the Yondu is a great father by how his son looked at him and admired him and respected him. Just watching them was a lot of fun and it was great seeing a young father-son duo. I'm just there as like a photobomber or something... Rocket ruining the better shots xD
