A New Zealand Rail / Tranz Metro "DM/D" class passenger electric multiple unit (EMU) on the platform at Johnsonville station, Wellington, New Zealand. This particular two-car set was the only one to wear the same paint scheme as the Ganz-Mavag "EM/ET" units, it has since been repainted into the same Tranz Metro scheme as its brothers. These units primarily run on the Johnsonville Line, as the later "EM/ET" units wouldn't fit through the 1880's vintage tunnels (although the tunnels were widened early this year).
The DM/D class are probably the oldest trains still in regular service outside of museum collections in New Zealand, as the last of these were built in 1954. In fact, three examples of this class had to be brought out of museums to provide additional passenger capacity on the Wellington commuter network - a situation akin to if the British rail company GNER raided the National Rail Museum in York and put the record-breaking "Mallard" steam train back into service for peak-time train services...
