Standing Up For Yourself and Others
Standing up for others can certainly be a difficult thing to do. Especially if they are someone you don’t even know beyond how they are mistreated or misunderstood by others.
One of our first examples of helping someone to be seen as more than a negative perception, comes from the episode “Bridle Gossip”. This episode is a great example of the negative effects of xenophobia because the stranger they hide from and are fearful of is a zebra who, only through Apple Bloom’s efforts, is eventually found to be quite friendly and helpful. However, it took Apple Bloom to see past all the ignorance of the townsfolk of Ponyville to allow Zecora to finally be seen for who she was instead of what she had been perceived to be.
Apple Bloom herself then gets her own support for being a ‘Blank Flank’ during “Call Of The Cutie”. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon bully Apple Bloom relentlessly over not having her Cutie Mark until two brave fillies decide to stand up to the bullies. These, of course, are Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle. They publicly make it known that they too are ‘Blank Flanks’ and that there is nothing wrong with it. This silences the bullies and starts a friendship that continues to thrive and help others as the beloved ‘Cutie mark Crusaders’.
The CMC has played a large role in aiding themselves and others through potentially traumatic events. Further examples are seen in “Appleoosa’s Most Wanted” where they helped Trouble Shoes escape a life of exile, “Crusaders of the Lost Mark” where they not only helped Pip, but also Diamond Tiara realize their full potential, and “The Fault In Our Marks” where they show Gabby Griffon she doesn’t need a Cutie Mark to have a purpose in life.
Along with the CMC stepping forward to help stand up for others is Spike. Spike’s first notable moment comes in “Dragon Quest”. Spike not only battles with his feelings about being a dragon among ponies, but later stands up for his pony friends after he discovers the dragons he met aren’t what he wants to be like nor associated with. He later has another run in with the dragons during “Gauntlet of Fire”. Here he has no desire to compete to become ‘Dragon Lord’ until he discovers plans by those competing to do harm on the ponies of Equestria once they win. He knows it will be dangerous and that it likely will make him have to leave his friends if he wins, but he realizes he must win in order to protect those he cares about. Fortunately, he befriends Princess Ember who is able to ally with ponies in lieu of him remaining Dragon Lord.
Spike also put his entire reputation with the Crystal Empire on the line during “The Times They Are A Changeling” for the rogue changeling, Thorax. Spike barely knew him, but believed he was not like other changelings. This was a big risk that put him in a very difficult position with even his friends. However his determination to give Thorax that chance paid off and would later prove vital during the events of “To Where And Back Again”. Showing how important it is to see stand up for others and always see the good in them even when others cannot.
These ideas aren’t just in canon stories. We too can spread them through our fan works. Those of you who may know of the fanwork me and Yosh have been working on will recognize Pint and Fall, two baby sized school age foals. Pint was able to be seen for his age and not just judged by his size when his friend Bucky stood up for him early on in school. He later takes the idea to that it is the size of your heart and not the size of your body that matters to his friend Fall defending her from bullies who call her a false foal. While it is important to see ourselves beyond our limitations it is equally important to see other people beyond theirs and stand up for them when they are bullied.
This doesn’t just apply to outside bullies though, if you notice someone constantly putting themself down for their limitation it’s just the same, you should still stand up for them even if that also means standing up to them this we can see in “Power Ponies”. Spike spends the whole episode acting as his own bully seeing himself as useless or nothing more than comic relief and needs his friends to point out just how much more he is. We all need to remember this and stand up people no matter who it is that it means standing up to.
