With the first design approved in 1982 and launched in 1987 as a new generation in SSBN (Nuclear Ballistic Submarines) with ability to take out targets 100,000 KM from the planet at a depth of 700 meters. But with the 1984 release of Tom Clancy's best selling book "The Hunt for Red October" The CDN redesigned the XXX to be fitted with a length running impeller system run off the electric motors of the reactor and out where the propeller was supposed to be.
