That sounds like its getting into a Vore territory. At that point they kinda ignore anatomy in favor of making what they want. Its also not something that interests me so it was never a consideration.
As for the animal species the thought was beginning and ending with "the are chill, exploratory, and opportunistic hunters" so probably a slower metabolism than usual but nothing slow or whatnot. They may not generate a ton of body heat, but they do have to keep alive.
