I used a lot of bruise colors in the background and the figure; hence the name. And the character strikes me as having a sense of pathos about him.
I wanted to go more emotive than natural on the colors. Usually I think a lot about local color and how to accurately shade and highlight. In this case, I just began to put down what I felt would look nice. The result is dully kaleidoscopic, but ultimately very pleasing. I fought with it a little bit but as soon as I put some burnt umber into the deep shadows, it really popped. The scan does not do it justice at all. >B(

It seems scanners never do any piece justice according to the artist. Regardless, I really like this piece. The red on his belly is subtle and intriguing. Strange, perhaps, but I really like animals/furries that have glasses. It's probably because I wear glasses and will until I get Lasik surgery done.
