Yay! More Frontier... Oh wait.
So yeah, this time it's set on Atreia one thousand years in the past. Get ready for high fantasy!
But not yet...
And don't worry, new readers! You don't need to have read Frontier to read this, (well, maybe the prologue is a bit weird) so go wild!
Art by my brother again :p
Teliko sat on her bed, trying to calm herself down. As much as she hated fighting with her father, he was just too much of a control freak sometimes. She scrolled through a website on her data pad and started reading. Reading calmed her down quite a bit, and she had been reading every book she could download since she was able to. The inevitable knock on the door came. “Teliko? Can I talk to you a minute?”
“Go away, I’m trying to read.”
The door opened. The years had been kind to Leph, his greying fur looked distinguished, and his face was still handsome. To a Human, this might seem strange, as Leph was only forty two and shouldn’t be graying. No one could fault a Human for not knowing Atrieans only lived to be around sixty, however. Leph sat at Teliko’s desk and sighed. “Just because our fleet recently got that fancy sub-space internet doesn’t mean you have to use it all the time. What are you reading?”
“I’m reading a blog.”
“You’ll rot your brain. Here, I’ve got something better.”
Leph took a book out of his pocket. To Teliko’s surprise, it was a bound book, the cover was faded, the title illegible and the binding weak. She eyed it suspiciously. “You’re not going to try and talk me out of-”
Leph waved his paw. “No, I realize the choice is yours. I think it’s too dangerous, though.”
“I know what you think.”
Leph placed the book on her desk and looked at it fondly. “This book has been in my family for a couple generations. It comes from when they used to still print books, as a novelty. Have you ever heard the story of Marten?”
“I pretty much know the synopsis. Thousand years ago, guy who unified Atriea, yada yada yada. But I’ve never read the original…”
Leph grinned and tapped the book. “Well, now you can. I read it when I was sixteen, and I think you should too.”
“I might.”
Leph knew she was still angry with him, so he walked to the door, pausing at it for a moment. “I love you, my daughter.”
The door closed. Teliko put down her pad and sat at her desk, running her paw over the leather book. “I love you too, Dad.”
She opened the book to the first page. Unlike the cover, here the title was visible.
“In the Shadow of the Valley… this looks interesting…”
She began to read.
