"But why do I haveta stay at Madeline's house, Mama?" Zee-Zee asked.
"Because I have to go to work, and Daddy's still on that business trip," said Zena.
Zee-Zee pouted, and chewed his thumb. It wasn't that he didn't like Madeline and her Daddy- both cubs went to the same daycare, and Charles read lots of stories to them both when they went to the library. It was just that he wanted to spend the day with Mama, because she was his Mama and Saturday was supposed to be their special day. He didn't want to share today with anyone else. It wasn't fair!
When they reached the doorbell, Mama asked "Do you want to try ringing the doorbell?" Zee-Zee didn't answer. He was hoping that if he didn't say anything, Mama would change her mind and perhaps take him with her to work.
"No? Okay then, I will." Zee-Zee’s Mama rang the doorbell, and Zee-Zee heard the pitter-patter of little paws running to the door.
The door flew open, and Madeline the bunny gave Zee-Zee a big, big hug! "Zee-Zee!" she squealed. Friends were so much fun!
"Oof!" said Zee-Zee, before hugging his bunny friend back. "Hi, Madeline."
"I'm so happy to see you! Lemme show you my new big brother an' big sister!" she said. And she dragged the poor squirrel in before he could say anything.
“Now now, Madeline; be gentle!” Charles the black cat admonished as the two cubs ran.
"Thank you so much for this!" said Zena to Charles.
"Not at all- I'd want someone to do the same for me, and I'm sure we'll all have a nice time."
“Hmm…I dunno, he seemed pretty reluctant.”
Meanwhile, Madeline was showing Zee-Zee her new bedroom. Now, Madeline and her Daddy used to live in an apartment, but since Mika and Melissa had become her new brother and sister, they'd had to move to another house. "And this is Rory my monkey, an' this is the window, an' this is where I sleep- oh, an' this is Mika! Hi Mika!"
Mika the Panda looked up from his cars to see his little sister and her playmate. "Hi Madeline, who's the squirrel?"
Zee-Zee could see that Mika was a big boy! He hoped he didn't end up having an accident in front of him or something horrible like that.
"This is Zee-Zee! His Mommy has to go do stuffs, so he's gonna stay an' play wit' us today. That means you haveta play wit' us togedder, okay?" Madeline was so excited, she was forgetting to use her big girl words!
"I dun' wanna play wit' you!" Zee-Zee whined.
That made Madeline feel sad. "Oh....you don't?" She felt her ears droop.
"No!" And he stomped out of the room angrily.
Poor Madeline felt her eyes water. She didn’t want to lose her new friend! Mika gave Madeline hug while giving Zee-Zee an angry look.
“You’re being a big stupid meanie!” Mika called after him. Zee-Zee pretended not to hear, but he did. He almost felt like crying! This wasn’t fair!
He stomped into the living room and yelled "Mama, I dun' want you to go! You're being mean!"
The two grown-up furs looked down to see Zee-Zee glaring up at Mama. She could see little angry tears beginning to form in her little son’s eyes.
"Zee-Zee...I don't want to go either." said Mama.
"You don't?" Zee-Zee replied. He was surprised! He had thought part of the reason Mama left was because she didn't love him as much as before.
"No. I'd rather stay with you. Being a grown-up is sooooo boring! But sometimes I have to go do grown-up things, and I need someone else to take care of you."
She scooped up the little squirrel into her arms. Zee-Zee guiltily looked at his Mama's chest. He felt a little bit bad now for yelling at her.
"Zee, look at me," Mama said gently. "Do you remember what I tell you sometimes when it’s time for daycare?"
"You always come back," Zee-Zee mumbled.
"That's right. Mama always comes back. Do you see that clock on the wall?" she pointed. "When the little hand is at the 3, and the big hand is at the 12, I'll be here to take you home."
Zee-Zee looked his Mama in the eye and asked "Do you promise?"
"I promise." Giving her son a kiss on the top of the head, she placed him into Charles's arms, opened the door and said "Bye-bye, Zee-Zee. I'll be back soon! Love you lots!" And then she went out the door, and everything was quiet.
Zee-Zee wasn’t sure if he liked that. Zee-Zee did feel a little better, but he still wasn't so sure about being home in a stranger's house, even if he had stayed at Madeline's house before. He chewed his fingers nervously.
"It'll be okay, bud," Charles said. "I have lots of fun things for us to do today."
"Like what?" Zee-Zee asked.
"Well, I was thinking we'd go out to the park for a little bit, and then-"
They were interrupted by the sound of little paws walking in. An orange wolf who must have been Melissa and Madeline were there, and Melissa had a scolding sort of look on her face.
"Zee-Zee, did you do anything to make my little sister feel sad?" Melissa asked.
"A little bit..." Zee-Zee mumbled.
"What kind of little bit?" Charles pried gently.
"I told her I didn't wanna play with her, 'cause I was mad at Mama leavin'," Zee-Zee said.
Charles set Zee-Zee back on the floor and asked "Okay. Can you say you're sorry?"
"Sorry..."
"No, darling; can you say sorry to Madeline?"
"Sorry, Madeline..."
Madeline seemed to accept the apology, because she ran up and gave Zee-Zee a hug!
"Yay! We're friends again now!"
Charles smiled. "I'm glad. Do you guys want to get your shoes and socks on so we can visit the park now?"
"Yeah!" Madeline shouted. She was so excited, she was having trouble remembering her indoor voice!
As soon as everyone was dressed and ready, Charles hunched the family diaper bag over his shoulder. It had diapering supplies, snacks, and small toys, which were useful for a day out with the little ones. “Alright guys. Out the door!” And they all went out to the car, where Charles made sure everyone was buckled up tight in their car seats.
Mika wasn’t sure why, but everything felt so heavy for some reason. Like he had to take a nap, only yuckier, somehow. It got worse as the car bumped out to the road. He tried closing his eyes and sucking his thumb.
Madeline’s house was at the end of a long driveway that led out to the main road. That road went up and down a lot of hills. Zee-Zee liked that! He made believe he was on a roller-coaster. “Weeeeee!” he squealed. “Ohhhhhhhhhh….” Mika groaned. Charles glanced in the rear view mirror to look at his son. His cheeks had an unhealthy greenish tinge to them, and his head was slumped to one side. “I think Mika’s getting carsick, Dad,” said Melissa.
“Oh my…Mika? Do you feel like you’re going to throw up?”
“No….Urp….not right now…”
“Okay. I’ll try rolling down the window and giving you some air.” Charles pressed the button on his left, and a nice strong breeze filled the car. That seemed to help Mika, because he passed out in his car seat, fast asleep.
“Phew!” Charles sighed in relief. “That’s one thing less to worry about. We’re almost there anyway.”
Sure enough, after the last left bend, Charles drove the car into a parking lot in front of a small hill. There was a nice large playground at the top of it, and beyond it was a soccer field and tennis court for the adults.
Charles helped each of the cubs out of their seats and lifted them down to the ground. Except Mika- he held his ear first to Mika’s tummy and listened for anything out of place. “No…Hm…Maybe it was the oatmeal. I thought it tasted off, too…” He hoisted Mika over his back, where the boy rested on his Dad’s shoulder. “Okay, you three,” Charles said, “you go play what you want, but remember to stay where I can see you.”
“What about Mika?” Madeline asked. She didn’t want to play without her big brother!
“I’m going to let Mika have his nap. He’ll probably want to play with you all later.” Charles said.
Madeline was not happy, but accepted this. “Okaaay,” she pouted.
The three cubs marched up the hill, where Melissa sked “What do you wanna play?”
Zee-Zee stayed quiet, but Madeline said “I dunno; what do you wanna play?”
“I don’t know; what do you wanna play?” Melissa teased.
“I dunno; what do you wanna play?” Madeline teased right back.
“I Don’t know; what-“
“TAG!” Madeline shouted, tapping her sister and running away.
“Wha-HEY!” shouted Melissa. She ran after her little sister, but it wasn’t easy. Bunnies could run as fast as they could jump!
Zee-Zee was left in the dust, not sure of what to do. Then Melissa switched targets! She tagged Zee-Zee, saying “Tag, you’re it!” But Zee-Zee just stared.
Confused as to why he wasn’t chasing her, Melissa said “Hm? Aren’t you gonna catch me, Zee-Zee?”
“Catch you?”
“That’s what tag is! You gotta catch me by touching me an’ saying ‘tag’, then I’m it, and then I can catch you or Madeline!”
Oh! Now Zee-Zee got it! He chased after Madeline and Melissa as the two girls darted between trees and scattered underneath the slide beams.
“Me first!”
“No fair!”
“Wait up!”
Charles sat down on the bench, smiling as he heard his children laughing. He took out a book and read peacefully while Mika napped on his shoulder and chewed his thumb. After a while, he heard a yawn, and saw his little boy waking up.
“Well hey there, bud! Are you feeling better after that nice nap?” Charles cooed.
“Mm-hmm….” Mika yawned, stretching his paws.
“How’s your tummy?”
“Still a little fuzzy, but not a whole lot…” the panda murmered.
“Ah, okay. How about some nice apple juice? That might help calm things down.” Charles fished around in his diaper bag until he pulled out a sippy cup.
“Notta baby…” Mika grumbled, but he still took the cup and started suckling.
“I know you’re not, sweetie,” Charles smiled as he scratched his son’s head. He was too polite to say so of course, but he liked that his children were still babies in some ways. Really, what parent doesn’t think of their child as a baby, no matter how old they get?
After a few minutes of suckling, Mika said “I’m gonna go play now!”
“Alright,” Charles smiled as his son climbed down from the bench. “Just stay where I can see you.” He watched his son scamper off, then went back to reading his book.
“Hey guys! What’re we playin’?” Mika asked.
“TAG!” Melissa and Madeline both yelled, getting him and then running off.
Mika made a swipe for Zee-Zee’s tail, but Zee-Zee managed to jump away, and both boys ran as fast as they could!
Zee-Zee was having so much fun! What had he been afraid of missing Mama for? Best of all, he was going to prove he could run and play just as hard as that big boy Mika! He seemed to have forgiven him for being mean to his little sister, and things felt so much better, inside and out!
Just as he ran out of breath, Mika got him from behind, yelling ‘Tag!’
But this time, Zee-Zee managed to get Mika before he got that far! “Tag!”
“Tag!”
“Tag!”
And on and on it went, both boys catching each other and only getting all of 10 feet before one got the other. Eventually, Mika decided to tag Madeline, and the game kept going.
Suddenly, Madeline a familiar kind of urgent need. She stopped in her tracks and waited for it to pass, staring out into the distance.
“Tag!” Melissa yelled. But when her little sister didn’t give chase, Melissa noticed the odd pose and faraway look in her eyes. “Maddie? Is everything okay?” Melissa asked.
“Mm-hmm…” Madeline mumbled. She focused hard. Then, she felt something release, and her diaper started getting warm and wet. She stuck her fingers in her mouth and looked down at her footpaws, waiting for it to finish.
Mika knew what was going on! “Heeheehee, Madeline’s wetting her diaper!” he giggled.
“Mika!” Melissa scolded. Why did boys always think potty jokes were funny?
“I’m not trying to be mean; she just looks so funny when she does that!”
Meanwhile, Zee-Zee felt a familiar wriggly feeling, and he knew it was time to ask the grown-ups about something rather important. But he was worried about leaving the game, and even more worried about what Mika would think. He wanted to be a big boy and not have to use the potty in the middle of playing, just like him! Zee-Zee tried not to make his potty dance too noticeable, but it wasn’t working.
Charles saw the children had stopped playing. Concerned, he put down his book and saw Zee-Zee gripping the front part of his pants rather tightly. He was shifting from footpaw to footpaw with a nervous look on his face. He walked over to his children and crouched down to Zee-Zee’s eye level.
"Do you need to go potty, sweetie?" Charles asked.
“Uh…maybe…” Zee-Zee replied.
“Oh, I think more than just maybe, mister! How about we go together?” Charles said.
“But I wanna play!” said Zee-Zee.
“But Zee-Zee, if you don’t go potty, you may have to play in wet pants! That doesn’t sound like much fun, huh?”
Suddenly, Madeline interrupted with "Daddy, I have wee-wee!"
"Okay sweetie; we’ll get your diaper changed too.” Turning back to Zee-Zee, he said “See, Madeline already went potty in her diaper, so we need to go to the bathroom anyway.”
Zee-Zee thought carefully. Well, it wasn’t that much fun to have to wear wet pants, and the need to go was getting a little stronger…
“You can start playing again after we finish.” Charles said. “Melissa and Mika will still be here to play tag with you and all that.”
Zee-Zee saw Charles’s point. “Okay. I’ll go potty.”
“Good boy!” Charles held out his paws, and Zee-Zee and Madeline took one each. “We’ll be back soon!” And together they took a quick walk to the gray building nearby that was the batroom.
Zee-Zee looked even more nervous when they walked in. He could feel the need to go potty very urgently! “Don’t worry babe; almost done,” Charles said. With Zee-Zee’s help, they managed to get his pants off and pull-up down around his legs.
Charles lifted Zee-Zee and set him down on the big potty. “Okay Zee-Zee; just relax.”
But nothing was happening! Maybe he didn’t need to go after all? There was an awkward sort of silence.
Madeline had never seen a boy use a potty before. What was all the fuss about? “Are you sure that’s how you go potty?” she asked. “’Cause I think wee-wee is supposed to come out by-“
“Uh, Madeline?”
“Yes?”
“I think maybe what Zee-Zee needs is a little privacy. So try looking down at the floor for a bit.” Charles took Zee-Zee’s paws and tactfully looked down at the toilet bowl.
It worked! Zee-Zee felt his bladder release, and he was rewarded by a gentle hissing sound.
“Yaaaaay!” Charles cheered. “Good job, Zee-Zee! You went pee-pee in the big potty all by yourself! Great job!”
Zee-Zee had the biggest smile on his face as Charles helped him down. He even managed to get his pants back up without too much help, too! “I did that!” he beamed, pointing.
“You sure did! Shall we flush now?”
Charles lifted Zee-Zee by the armpits, and Zee-Zee pushed the lever. It was so much fun to watch the contents disappear down the hole! “Bye-bye, wee-wee!” Zee-Zee said.
“And now with that, it’s time for your diaper change, Madeline!” Charles lifted up Madeline and took her over to the changing table.
Hmph! If this was what the potty was all about, Madeline was glad she still needed her diapers. Why go to all this trouble and embarrassment when it was so much easier to just let it all come out on its own? Not to mention, just let Daddy take care of the mess.
“Heeheehee, Madeline peed her diaper! I don’t haveta do that anymore!” Zee-Zee teased.
Madeline stuck out her tounge. “At least I dun’ haveta stop playing just to look stupid!”
“Now now children, let’s be nice. Don’t say mean things; say nice things!” Charles scolded gently. “Madeline, can you lift up your dress for me, please? Thank you,” said Charles as he undid the tapes on her diaper.
“Wow, we sure are wet,” Charles said, seeing how soaked his daughter’s diaper was.
“I peed lots!” Madeline said, feeling very proud of herself.
“Yep! You sure did,” Charles cooed as he wiped Madeline’s bum. He removed the wet diaper and pulled a new one out from the diaper bag. Then he gave a generous sprinkling of baby powder so his bunny wouldn’t get a yucky ol’diaper rash!
“Heeheehee! That tickles, Daddy!”
“Oh? I bet this does too! Pbbtttttttt!” Charles gave Madeline a raspberry on her feet!
“Hahahahahaha!” Madeline laughed.
“Such a sweet little baby bunny…” Charles smiled gently, and then finished taping up Madeline into her new diaper. “All done!” he cooed, lifting Madeline back down from the changing table. “No more pee-pee diaper!” He threw the old diaper away in the nearby trash can, and then made sure everyone washed their paws.
As they left the building, Charles managed to take a look at his watch. “Melissa, Mika!” he called. “I think we need to head home soon!”
“Aww!” Melissa whined. “But why?!”
“Because its nearly two o’clock already, and we need to be home on time for Zee-Zee’s Mama. Plus, it’s almost naptime for you three.”
Melissa put on her best pout and whined “But Daaaad, can’t we just go down the slide ooooone time?”
Poor Charles knew he had to be consistent, but Melissa looked much too cute to say no! “Okay, you can all go down the slide one time each. But after that, we all need to get home.”
“Yaaaaay!” Melissa cheered. She clambered up to the tall, purple plastic slide and sat down. “Catch me, Daddy, catch me!” she yelled.
Charles smiled, got down on his knees at the slide’s base, and opened his arms nice and wide. “Okay darling, I’m ready!”
“Weeeeeeee!” Melissa came down fast, and after a lot of twists and turns, she landed in her Daddy’s arms. “Heeheeheehee! That was fun!” Charles gave her a small kiss and said “I bet it was, sweetie!”
He did the same with Mika, and again with Madeline. But when it was Zee-Zee’s turn, the little squirrel wasn’t quite as sure. That slide looked awfully high, and he wasn’t sure if he could do it by himself.
“What’s the matter, Zee-Zee? Do you wanna try the slide, or do you wanna head home?”
“Um……” Zee-Zee put his finger in his mouth and chewed it a little. “Can I do it with you?” He hoped Charles wouldn’t be mad.
“Heh, of course we can, babe!” Charles replied. He scooped up Zee-Zee over his shoulder, and together they climbed to the top.
It was very high! Zee-Zee could even see the car from here! If he didn’t have a grown-up, he may have been even more nervous than he was already.
“Come sit on my lap, Zee.” Charles said.
Zee-Zee climbed onto the big cat’s lap, and held the sides of the slide very tight. “Will it hurt?” he asked quietly.
“Oh c’mon; I’m right here! Are you ready?”
“….I guess so…” Zee-Zee gripped Charles’s pant legs very tightly.
“Here we go! One…two…three…weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”
Down and down and down they went! They slid so fast and twirled so long that Zee-Zee didn’t even know what he had been afraid of! In fact, Zee-Zee thought they had even gone faster than everyone else!
When they got to the bottom, Zee-Zee yelled “Let’s do that again!”
“Sorry babe, but its time to go.”
“Awwww, but that was so much fun!” Zee-Zee pouted.
“Listen, soon your Mama will be coming to pick you up, and she’ll want to know about everything you did today! Won’t that be nice? You could even bring her here and show her!”
Oh, now that did sound much better! That way, they could come here tomorrow and Zee-Zee could play here with Mama. “Okaaaayyy,” Zee-Zee conceded.
Charles got everyone together (for Mika and Melissa had been playing on the merry-go-round while Charles was with Zee-Zee,) and they made the long drive home.
The front door was opened, and everyone walked inside. Zee-Zee looked around, hoping to see Mama. But she wasn’t there! He felt his heart sink. What if Mama had forgotten her promise?
“I guess she’s not quite here yet; it’s still 20 minutes to three. I think now’s a good time for tea!” Charles went to the kitchen nearby to prepare the water. After setting the kettle on, he started setting up the table. He put out a bunch of small blue plates with small blue cups, a big blue plate in the middle, and a big blue teapot on the kitchen counter next to the stove.
Zee-Zee was a little curious. He thought Charles was just making tea for himself! “What’s this?” he asked.
“Afternoon tea! My Mama always said she knew she had good sons if they knew how to make good tea! We’ll all sit down and have a cup of tea and something nice to eat while we wait for your Mama.”
That sounded like a nice idea. Zee-Zee asked “Can I help?”
Charles replied “Not with the stove, I’m afraid; that’s a grown-up job. But you can help put the fruit on the big plate in middle.” Here the cat pointed to the bananas and grapes he had set out. Zee-Zee carefully climbed up the stool (squirrels were good at that,) and using both paws, he carried the grapes and bananas to the big table. “I did it!”
“Good job!” Charles said. The kettle whistled, and Charles poured the hot water into the big blue teapot. He put a few ice cubes in each of the children’s teacups, so that the tea would be warm but not too hot. He certainly didn’t want any big owies to happen that way! Finally, he added a bit of lemon juice and sugar to the tea to make it taste nicer for the cubs.
“Tea’s ready! Let’s hold hands.”
There was the pitter-patter of little paws as Charles’s other three cubs came into the room, and took their chairs. Everyone took someone else’s paw, and Charles started the grace.
“Angels of God, our guardians dear, to whom God’s love commits us here- “
“-ever this day be at our side, to love and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.” Madeline and Melissa picked up the other half.
“Well, good girls! I’m impressed you remember it all!” Charles praised. He took the time to pour tea into everyone’s cup, and then relaxed to the sound of his cubs munching and sipping.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. “I wonder who that is…” Charles went up to get the door. Zee-Zee peered after him, wondering who it was too.
“Well hi! How are you?” Charles asked.
“I’m well, thank you! How was-“
Zee-Zee knew that voice! “MAMA!” Zee-Zee shouted. He ran up to her and gave her a great big hug! “I MISSED YOU!”
“Oof! Hahaha! I missed you too, you beautiful little boy!” Zena cooed.
“Zee-Zee? Tell your Mama what you did today!” Charles said.
Zee-Zee smiled shyly and said quietly “I…I went pee-pee on the potty today…”
His Mama was so proud of him! “Wow Zee-Zee, good job! I bet you’ll be ready for big kid pants very soon!” She gave her son a big kiss on the top of his head.
“And you know what else?” Charles prompted.
“What else?” asked Zena.
“I went down the big slide at the park! Well, Madeline’s Daddy helped…” Zee-Zee said.
“Aww, good for you! Sounds like you had a really fun time!” Turning to Charles, she asked “So things worked out okay in the end?”
“Yep, he just needed some time to play.”
“I’m glad. Well, Zee-Zee, do you want to say goodbye?”
Zee-Zee thought about this. “Can Mika, Melissa, an’ Madeline come play tomorrow?”
Charles smiled. “I don’t see why not, if your Mama’s okay with it.”
“Of Course!” she said. “The more we are together, the happier we’ll all be.”
“Bye Mika, bye Madeline, bye Melissa!”
“Bye! See you tomorrow!” they all called.
And Zee-Zee rode home happy on his Mama’s shoulders, happy that it had been a beautiful Saturday after all.
A nice story I've been working on for
Zee-Zee I hope he likes it!
