Japanese Mythology - The Seventh Potion
This one is for
AnAlternateGuy234 of him turning into a Basan! It's a cold-fire breathing chicken. He also wrote a story to go alone with it!
It was supposed to be just a normal day for me. I was relaxing, rping with friends on discord, checking FA for the newest (transformation) based artwork, and just enjoying my summer vacation before I went back to college. It would not be a normal day, however, as I randomly and without warning found myself feeling woozy and light headed. I also noticed a strange tingling sensation as I felt myself being picked up by a mysterious force and seemingly carried off to who knows where. I wouldn’t find out where though, as I found myself lapsing into unconsciousness as I was carried off.
I awoke to the smell of incense hanging in the air. As I opened my eyes, I was met not with the sight of my bed nor my house. Startled, I practically jumped up and looked around my new surroundings. I saw a counter with a blue sign on the front of it reading “Hooked on Potions”, though the t in potion had a weird hook on the bottom. The corner was a much darker blue with “How may I help you?” written on it. The counter itself had nothing on it; but the shelves behind it did. I saw several weird vials and bottles of various shapes and sizes stocked on the shelves. The bottles had various colored liquids and some actually seemed to give off various auras as they sat there with their mysterious contents. Above the shelves hung another sign, this one red and read “Japanese Mythology” with Japanese characters above the English wording (Not speaking nor reading Japanese, I only assumed it read the same as the English wording). I slowly approached the counter in an attempt to figure out not only where I was, but also what happened to me. As I approached it though, I weird otter thing leapt out from behind the counter and landed on top of it.
“Hello!! Welcome to Hooked on Potions. What would you like today?” The strange otter creature said.
I did the most sensible thing when suddenly approached by a weird creature in a mysterious place: I leapt back with a yelp.
“Hey, whoa, calm down!! I know you’re confused right now, but please allow me to explain!!”he said in an attempt to calm me down.
“What are you?” I asked him.
“Well I have a name you know? My name is Luke and this,” he waved his arm towards the counter, “is Hooked on Potions. It’s a shop where you get to choose you a potion and chug away.” The otter man told me.
I was naturally skeptical of the whole thing, “Why would I just drink something from somebody who just kidnapped me?”
“Well, you were chosen to come here; chosen by me to receive a gift that will give you strange and mystical powers. Did you ever want to fly? Breathe fire? Turn into something else? Well one of these potions can gift you with such a power!!” he explained with glee.
“What if I don’t want to take one though?” I asked.
“Then you can leave out that door.” He said as he pointed to a door behind me. “You will wake up back in your home with no recollection of what happened here.” he explained.
“Or~”, he trailed off pointing to the shelves full of potions, “you can choose one of these potions, and receive a mystical power associated with that potion!”
I looked between the otter, the door, and the potions as I tried to come to a decision as to what I would do.
“What is the price for the potion?” I asked.
“Don’t worry about the price! It will already be paid for when you take a drink from one.”
“Why would you give them away for free then?”
“I enjoy the feeling of watching people going through a life changing experience, that’s all!”
I thought about all that transpired before me. It seemed strange to me that he would just give these away to people for free. Then again, seeing a talking otter running a potion shop is already strange enough. He also seemed nice enough and didn’t seem malicious to me. Plus, I could get a cool power from just drinking one potion, for free on top of that. I really didn’t have much to lose in my mind.
“Okay, I guess I’ll try one.”
The otter smiled at me and motioned me over to the counter.
“Good! Good! Now I had someone come in already and take off with one of my potions,” he motions towards an empty spot, “but you are free to choose the other remaining ones if you desire.”
I look at the variety of potions that were lining the shelves. I found myself being my usual indecisive self a I looked over the strange vials and jars trying to figure out which one I wanted. After a short time looking them over, I decided to say screw it and pointed at a random one.
“That one, I want that one.”
My hand pointed to a claw shaped bottle with a multicolored liquid inside. It seemed to be giving off embers as it lie there.
“Hmmm, a strange choice, though I think you will like it regardless”
He jumped over and grabbed the bottle in his hands before he just as quickly returned with it in tow. He held the claw shaped bottle before me. I took it and carefully held it carefully in my hand, expecting it to be hot. It wasn’t however; in fact, it felt cool to the touch. I waved my hand over the top of the bottle where the embers where flowing out of. To my surprise, the embers didn’t burn me; they didn’t even feel hot. After examining the bottle I looked at the otter.
“What does this one do?”
“The bottle gives a hint as to what it might do. Besides that, it’s a surprise. You will only find out once you do drink the bottle.”
I looked back at the bottle trying to figure out what it would do. I figured maybe it would make me breath fire, or maybe become a fire bender or something. I already chose the potion however and decided to once again say screw it. I slowly brought the bottle to my lips and tipped it back. As the contents flowed into my mouth, I felt the taste of… chicken? I found myself swallowing most of it before choking at the unexpected taste.
“Aaahh! You could’ve warned me about the taste.” I exclaimed.
“Sorry, but the taste shouldn’t be the main thing on your mind right now.”
As I held the now lighter bottle, I felt woozy once more. My head swam as my head suddenly felt like it was changing; reforming would be the more correct term. I felt my hair twisting and turning as it turns into a fleshy protrusion on the tops of my head. The new protrusion turned a fiery orange as it finished its transformation. My beard did the same thing as it solidified into an orange growth on my neck. I reach up and felt the strange growths on both my neck and the top of my head.
“What the..?”
“Oh! Your comb and wattle are coming in nicely! Nice and fiery looking, like a proper Basan!”
“I’m growing a what!?!”
At that point, I felt a pressure mounting on my face. The pressure grew stronger and stronger until something started pushing outwards from my face painfully. I yelled as my hands flew to my face as I felt whatever it was push outwards as it started to harden into something. My nose disappeared into 2 tiny holes as my faced formed, to my shock and horror, a beak!
“A BEAK!!! Why am I growing a beak!?!?” I yelled in shock.
“You do realize what is happening, right?
My arms and hands started to feel weird as they completely reshaped. All but 2 of my fingers disappeared at that moment. On finger, my thumb I realized, moved up my arm while the other one grew outward slightly. My arms started to rearrange themselves as the joints started moving around to better suit my new wings they would support. Feathers grew out from underneath my jacket, big and multicolored with greens, blues, and oranges. I looked down at my arms turned wings as feathers rapidly grew on my face and started to work their way down.
“What do your mean what is happening? You turning me into a BAGAAWW!!”
The sudden clucking came as my neck grew slightly and readjusted itself on my body. My vocal cords changed rapidly, robbing me of human speech and replacing it with the crows and clucks of a chicken.
“I told you that the potion would be paid when you drank it. The price was your humanity!!”
“BAGAAAWWW!!” I crowed in shock as I reached up my neck with my new wings.
Feather of oranges, blues, and greens started erupting all over my body as they worked on bringing me closer and closer to my new form. It felt like someone was pricking me with needles all over my body as the grew forth and covered my skin. I felt a series of very sharp pricks coming from just above my rear as I turned my head to investigate. I saw a series of very large feather growing out to form by new tail feathers. I turned back to the otter at the moment with a look of anger in my eyes.
“BAAWWKK BUCK BUCK BAAWWWKK” I squalled at him
“Hey calm down you big chicken! You will like your new life, trust me! Just wait until you see your new power!”
I was about to release another series of angry multicolored chicken noises when a large snap and a horrible pain seized my leg. I looked down to see that my legs started bending the opposite way. My toes merged into three digits on each foot with my big toe migrating both up and behind my legs with a series of loud and painful pops and cracks. Long talons grew forth from my toes as the tried to grip the concrete floor for balance. Black keratin replaced the skin of my legs as they finished their transformation.
“BAAAWWWWKKK BAWWWKKKK BUCK BAAAWWWWK” I yelled in pain as my skeletal structure started reforming before me. My body had readjusted my form so that I would be leaning forward when standing, with my arm (now wing) pinned by my side. My body had started to shrink at this point as I felt the world grow bigger around me.My body continued to shrink until I was about the size of a turkey. I looked around with my new perspective as my body was almost done with my transformation.
“Oh now comes the fun part!! Are you ready to see your new powers manifest themselves?” The otter man (Who I was now only slightly taller than) asked with glee.
I clucked in confusion before I gripped my chest with my wings. A searing pain erupted from within my body as my internal organs shifted about to better suit my new body. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I felt something brewing around inside me. It burned like the worst kind of heartburn as it continued to grow and grow until…
“AAAACCCKKKK” I screamed and opened my mouth. A stream of blue fire erupted from my mouth at that moment, covering the room in a spectacular blue light from the flame. Despite the giant flame that engulfed the shelves, the did not seem to catch fire; in fact, they were unharmed.
“WOOOHOOOO!!! That was amazing!” The otter said as he took cover behind the counter.
My beak closed as I looked about at the non-destruction I produced. I looked at the otter in confusion at what happened.
“Your new powers, by the way, is a cold fire that you can breath at will. It won’t ignite anything flammable, and can damage or even destroy the souls of creatures. Pretty cool right? No need to thank me, I know you love your new form!!”
I looked at him with fury in my eye. He sits there patting himself on the back as he robbed me of my humanity and put me into the body of a multicolored chicken. I lunged towards him at that moment trying to grab him. Unfortunately , I was not yet comfortable with my new way of walking as I stumbled forward and landed with a thump.
“Ouch… are you okay?”
I crowed in anger as I drew from the mysterious power within my breast and shot blue flame at him. He dodged out of the way and started running away.
“I guess now is not the time to tell you we don’t give refunds!!”
I continued to shoot blue flames around the store in an attempt to get the agile otter, until I felt the woozy feeling from when I was at home grip me once more. My body wobbled around until I fell onto my side. I felt the familiar sensation of being picked up once again by the mysterious force. As I lapsed into unconsciousness, I heard the otter say:
“Thank you for shopping here!! Hope you enjoy your new life! Be sure to tell your friends and family about us! Oh wait… you can’t speak now.” He said sounding dejected.
I awoke to the sounds of a running river. I opened my eyes slowly to find myself in some kind of forest with bamboo surrounding me.My eyes shot open at that point as the memory of what transpired before flooded me. I lifted my head and looked at my body. I saw the chicken legs, body, feather, and wings in all their glory. I looked over at the small, gently running river and stood up. I had to get a better look at my form, and the river was the only real reflective surface I had at that point. I found myself stumbling towards it on shaky legs as I tried to adjust to my new style of walking. I eventually made it over to the river and gazed upon my new visage. The clear water showed me the beak, comb, and wattle that now made up my new head. It showed the multicolored feathers that now decorated my form. It showed the weirdly shaped legs with keratin instead of skin on them. It showed me my new form, and the full gravity of my lost humanity
“BAAAAWWWKKK!!” I crowed as the terror of the situation weighted upon me, clutching at my heart, and sending me reeling back. My wings flew out from my sides and started flapping rapidly.
“Basabasabasa” I heard as I flapped my wings in terror. The sound startled me and my wings snapped back to my sides. As they did so, the sound ceased, leaving nothing but the sounds of the gently running river. I looked around to find the source of the strange sound, but found nothing. I looked down at my wings and brought them out once more. I flapped them rapidly and then…
“Basabasabasa”
I heard the sound once more as I flapped my wings. I pulled them back to my side and heard the sound dissipate as I did so. I was long since confused about my new form and what just transpired only caused the confusion to mount. Here I was, now a chicken with brightly colored feather, who can breath a cold fire, and makes a strange sound whenever I flapped my wings.
I sat down on my rump and tried to make sense of my situation. As I sat down however, I noticed something near where I woke up. I looked at it and realized it was the potion bottle! I walked over to it and looked it over. There was a little bit of liquid inside, and the bottle was still spewing forth the cold embers. I picked it up in my wings only to drop it. It did not break, fortunatly, but it did show that my wings were not going to be good substitutes for hands. I leaned my head forward and picked the bottle up with my beak, like how an animal would a realized with resignation.
As picked it up however, I heard something from the bushes. I turned and saw a group of humans walking along a trail. My heart started racing as one of them noticed me and pointed in my direction. I flapped my wings in shock, releasing the sound once more, and took off running in a random direction, deeper into the bamboo forest I was in.
Several Weeks Later
I was starting to get used to my new form, as it turned out. Keep in mind that I still did not like it, and I would take my humanity back in a heartbeat, but I was growing more accustomed to it everyday. When I started out, I had no idea what I was (beyond what the otter called a Basan and that I could breath a cold fire) and what I was going to do. However, I managed to come across a village and, with a little bit of sneaky sneakies and some ingenuity, I managed to get myself access to the internet. After some basic research, I found out I was now a rare, mythological, Japanese, bird creature who supposedly (not anymore) inhabit the mountainous, bamboo forests of japan, far from human civilization. My form apparently got its name from the sound it makes when I flap my wings. My breath ,like the otter told me, was heat less and would not ignite flammable surface. I also found out that my diet now consisted of charred wood, charcoal, and embers. That piece of information put me at ease when I woke up to find myself munching on pieces of wood (plus since I was a vegetarian before I turned, it was a relief knowing I wasn’t purely carnivorous). I also discovered, both from my research and from experience in my body, I was inclined to be nocturnal. One other thing I found out was that I supposedly ‘disappear’ when I flap my wings and get startled or pleased. The truth though is that I am just a really fast and agile runner now; I ‘disappear’ by becoming roadrunner basically.
Of course, all this research did not really answer some of my other questions. Why did I end up in the otters shop? Why did he transform me? What will become of me know? And a myriad of other questions lay unanswered. However, as I snuck around the village at night trying to find some tasty charcoal to stock up on, I started to hear about several other supposed mythological creatures that were supposedly sighted. Now, I know the local village I stalked also talked about me, but this time, they were talking bout some kind of dragon. They said he was spotted around a village that was actually close to where I was at. I remembered what the otter said when I was in his shop: “Good! Good! Now I had someone come in already and take off with one of my potions..” If I wasn’t the first, then I certainly was not the last one to be transformed.I soon came to a conclusion with this information: If I can find that dragon, then maybe I can find some answers as to what happened to us. At the very least, it would be good to have some companionship with another creature. So I ‘borrowed’ a satchel, stocked up on burnt wood and charcoal, made sure to bring the potion bottle along as proof of my transformation, and prepared to venture out to find the dragon who shared the same fate as I, and maybe, just maybe, I would find some answers to some of the questions that I had.
Thanks to my new found speed, I reached where he was supposedly spotted at within a day of my expedition. I found myself at a village situated by the coastline and a forest off in the distance, several rivers crisscross the landscape. I realized I had my work cut out for me in regards to sniffing him out. For the next 2 days I searched for him in the forests and also snuck into the village to listen to rumors about the creature. It all came to a head one day as I was wandering around where a group of people claimed to have seen him/her. I was getting tired as I saw the sun rising, signaling the end of my night of hunting for it. I started to make my way back when I heard something rustling in the treeline. I looked around but didn’t see anything, nothing but trees and darkness. I sighed, I must have been hearing things. Lack of sleep does that to you, and in my excitement I haven’t slept much in the last couple of days. I suddenly found my self being slammed from behind and pinned down. The long, noodle looking dragon looked down at me with hunger in his eyes. He licked his lips and moaned as he opened his maw to devour me.
“AAAACKKAAAWW” I yelled as I opened my mouth and released a stream of cold fire towards the dragon. He flew back in surprise as I rolled to my feet and backed away from him.
“basabasabasa” my wings sounded out as I panickedly flapped them. The dragon was now really confused by what I guess he assumed to be a chicken. First it breathed fire, and now its wings make a strange sound when it flaps them? I realized that he was not going to attack me and calmed down. We looked each over in awe and confusion. He was a long, thin, and purple eastern type dragon. Now wings were visible on his back yet he floated in the air, held aloft by magic I supposed. Antlers jutted from his head as a glorious blonde mane rolled up and down the top of his body. All in all, he looked like some kind of sea dragon from what I gathered.
After getting a good look at my fellow mythological creature, I slowly brought me head into my satchel and pulled out the bottle that started my new life. I sat it on the ground and looked up at him. He looked it over for a moment before a look of realization came over him. He flew away before quickly returning with a bottle himself. This one was tall, with something wrapping around it from the outside. I looked it over and confirmed my suspicions; he too was at the shop and was transformed. He looked at me and nodded, pointing to my bottle. I nodded back as I picked it up and returned it to my satchel. He smiled with tears in his eyes as he flew over to give me a hug. I returned the hug, tears rolling down my beak as well at the first kind of contact I had with somebody in weeks. We sat there, a water dragon and a mythical chicken, both with their humanities robbed, hugging each other with tears in our eyes. Though neither of us could speak, we both knew we wouldn’t be alone anymore.
Several more weeks passed since then. He showed his little hideout he found, a small cave situated on the coast. For several weeks we both survived together, making a good team in the process. Since he would hunt during the day, I would hunt at night. Sometimes, he would keep lookout as I snuck inside the village to find info or anything else we might need. He would also give me an impromptu bath with his water powers after I return from dumpster diving in the village. After a while though, we both began hearing rumors and stories about other creatures being spotted all over the place. I knew I couldn’t sleep easy with the knowledge of others being alone in their new forms, nor would I give up on my search for the potion shop where this all started. So one night, I started packing my satchel with supplies for another journey. I gazed over to at my new friend who was currently asleep, his draconic face barely lit by the dim glow of the dying fire. I looked over his body and chuckled; he was getting thicker, I realized. With all the food he was eating, I wasn’t surprised he was gaining weight, not that I was judging him over it. I wondered then if he would come along with me to find the other. I hoped so, I didn’t want to alone when I confronted the others. Who knows how THEIR changes may have affected them? Regardless though, I couldn’t stand by and do nothing. I was going to go on an adventure to see if the others who were transformed were okay and not causing trouble. The last thing any of us need to worry about was people going out hunting for us.
I walked out to the mouth of the cave and looked out at the night sky.I took a deep breath, taking in the fresh ocean breeze, and sighed. Though I hate to admit it, but the otter was right; I was starting to enjoy this life of mine.
