War Wolf stepped closer to Vesara, her mouth frozen in a deep scowl, and said in a low and even voice. “You have no idea what Violetta is capable of. I do...I know very, very well. She needs to be stopped. Either help me with that or get the hell out of my way.”
“Would you please stop being so stubborn and just listen to yourself for one moment!? Are you like this without the mask as well? I mean, the way you’re acting now I’d bet you’d shove your own family off a bridge if Violetta was on the other side!”
The words were like a knife to the heart, sharpened by the agony of Violetta’s escape. War Wolf saw red and before she even knew what she was doing, her hands balled into fists and she swung, connecting a solid, hard left hook to Vesara’s muzzle. The other heroine stumbled back, shocked, as War Wolf’s chest rose and fell with deep, painful breaths.
Vesara put her hand up to the side of her face, holding her stinging jaw, but in truth she didn’t even feel the pain. The shock of what had just happened, the emotion War Wolf displayed in a way she'd never even imagined the wolfess could, had occupied her mind completely. Shock slowly turned to anger and before she knew it, Vesara felt her own fist flying through the air. It was raw, wild punch, as much fueled by emotion as War Wolf's had been. The wolfess easily could have blocked it. But she didn't. She didn't even try. War Wolf's head snapped to the side from the blow, but she stayed on her feet and slowly turned her head back to return Vesara's glare.
Seconds passed for what seemed like hours. The wind whipped around them, as if sharing in their rage.
It was finally Vesara who broke the silence as she thrust a hand into one of the pouches on her belt. “Fine. If that’s the way you want to do this, then you can have this back.” Clutching the small communicator that War Wolf had given her that first night when they teamed up, she threw it back at War Wolf’s feet. Paying little heed to the device, War Wolf continued to stare at Vesara. “You obviously just want it to be you and Violetta and I'm getting in the way of that. So guess what, wish granted. You don’t want me around anymore, and I won’t be.” She angrily turned to leave.
War Wolf watched her go, her jaw set. She said nothing. She didn’t even know what would come out if she tried to speak. Once she was alone on the roof in the pressing silence and darkness, she took a deep breath and tried to calm herself. The communicator lay on the ground, staring at her. She knew this entire alliance had been a mistake from the start and her only comfort was knowing that at least in driving Vesara away, she'd be safe from Violetta. But that still didn't entirely mitigate the sting of Vesara's words and the pain of the evil lynx's victory tonight.
War Wolf stared at the communicator for a few more seconds and narrowed her eyes. Before leaving the roof herself, she brought her boot up and smashed the device into the gravelly concrete.
