Part Two of The Darted Series of short stories. I like doing these because I can get them done really quickly.
This is Simon again. I am recording this for future investigators to follow my work in case something happens to me. Two days ago I saw a guy get shot with a dart and transform into a gorilla in front of my eyes. That night I heard that he was picked up by some mysterious person claiming he escaped from his “animal sanctuary.” Now I did some research and the only thing close to that is the Riverside Animal Park about 100 miles from here. I am not sure if that was the place they took Greg the Gorilla but that is my hunch. Since that day in the park I have returned to the same spot and kept my eyes out for the Hooded Man. I don’t know what he is planning or why he changed Greg but I am going to find out.
So far, I have seen no sign of the Hooded Man and have given up finding him in the park. Honestly, he could have picked another town or city somewhere else. At least that is what I thought before I was walking home one day and saw this random guy walking his flowers. He looked like he was in his late twenties or something. Any way all of a sudden his white van drives slowly by and comes to a stop. The next thing you know the window rolls down and there he is. The Hooded Man. He shoots another dart directly at the guy, let’s call him Fred. He goes down and I hide in the bushes of the house I’m standing in front of. There is no one around. Any cars that pass would only see the van but not what was going on the other side. I looked around hoping someone would drive along and see this but the street was deserted. What is up with that?
Fred is on the ground and raises his arm. It starts swelling and I mean it was getting huge. His nose started growing too. It drooped down like some invisible hand was pulling it. It became rounder as it became longer. His skin turned a gray color that spread around his swollen arms and stomach. His face was changing color too as his nose grew longer still. His teeth started growing. Two escaped from his mouth and jutted forward until they curved slightly. His fingers fused together as he raised them to his mouth. He looked very uncomfortable with his mouth is such an odd shape. His poor ears flew open and stretched into the shapes of flags. They were gray sheets flapping in the wind. His clothes started ripping apart as his body burst out from them. His stomach grew to gigantic proportions as it became round and grayer. His legs did the same. His feet folded into themselves becoming large cylinders each with five boney toes. Fred’s skull cracked and grew larger and larger to match the rest of his giant body. He raised his trunk and let loose an ear busting trumpeting sound. The gray skin started becoming rougher and wrinkly. From behind a long tail grew out and fell loose between his legs. Finally, he stood up on all fours and swung his trunk around wildly. I was afraid he was going to hit someone if there was someone around. He stamped around crushing his flowers and leaving massive footprints in the dirt. He was obviously upset which considering he just changed into an elephant I cannot blame him.
A glint catches my eye and I turn to the van. The Hooded Man pulls out a gun and shoots Fred three times. But instead of bullets they were more darts. Tranquilizer darts because Fred fell. Two tons of elephant hit the ground and sent shock waves so strong I fell backwards. I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture of Fred lying there on the ground.
As much as I hate to admit it, I ran. I was not going to let the Hooded Man to that to me. He could shoot me with who knows what if he wanted to. So I burst out of the bushes and ran down the road without looking back. By the time I got home I came to my room and jotted down my notes. This was the second time the Hooded Man appeared and somehow was able to change a normal human into some kind of animal. There was strong possibility that he struck before but I was not around. The questions still remain: who is he, where is he getting the darts, where is he taking the human/animals after he is done with them?
