Backgrounds are typically unecessary for just character designs and models, I usually only do backgrounds if I'm doing a complete scene, because backgrounds usually make me bored of the pic itself, because all I really care about is the character... I'll get into backgrounds more as I develop a bigger need to create more than just characters, but whole scenes themselves.
