T. Matt Latrans brings you the highlights from Game 1 of the 2009 FBA Finals
This is a repost of Game 1, with the file fixed to play properly in the flash player. I also added the song "Teddy" from
baddwill to the background, since there's no question, the music makes the podcast more sporty.

Yeah, but that was the problem. I've swapped out my picture submission files with no problem, but for some reason I couldn't do it with the audio submission. I tried on 3 different computers, but after the first re-submission of the audio file, the file always went up corrupted and unplayable. That's why
jtigerclaw wasn't able to listen to it.
I guess there's just a bug in the FA software for updating an audio submission. That's why I was forced to resubmit the whole thing.

The music really does give the podcast a nice energy boost. I think you could further mix it up a bit with some sound effects with an intro, maybe some crowd cheer sounds when Buckhopper enters into the scene. One thing that might be fun to try is to take a portable device and record some stereo ambience, say at a few minutes in a busy, reverby mall, mix it in so it's barely audible underneath the music but enough to give it more of a live, spatial feel.
That's a really good idea, RG! I absolutely want to add sound effects to these podcasts. I'm actually thinking of trying one of those online sound effect libraries like Sound Dogs to get the effects I need. Never tried using them before, this would be a good chance to see how they work. That's a cool idea recording ambience in a mall, though-- might have to dust off the old miniDisc recorder.
Thanks for the suggestions, RG! I can always count on my fellow bunnies!

hahaha, glad to help!! Actually, when I first got my sony portable minidisc player/recorder, I probably filled up about 10 tapes worth of such recordings, including a few hours at Disneyland but nearly all minidisc devices only have digital in but not digital out. and a semi-working one I found that has digital out can't partition tracks into separate files which would be a pain to do by hand. Maybe I'll look eBay for a cheap old pro model since nobody seems to use minidisc anymore. :)
I've still got an MZ-1 which was the very first miniDisc released in the States. It has a digital out-- it's probably the only portable that does. I still prefer to record sound effects with my MZ-R37 then use the MZ-1 to download the audio.
I once spent a day in a metal scrapyard gathering sound effects for an animated movie with that setup. It worked pretty good!

Haha, that's some really nifty animation! I am certain I've seen this one before but can't place it where. Was it included on a Miramar animation showcase DVD?
MZ-37 is what I have too. Actually two, in case I wanted to go quadrophonic. :) Mics are just cheap Radio Shack stereo condensers but they work fine. My deck is an MDS-JE510 that has trouble ejecting but it's a common problem when this model reaches a certain age. ;)

Thanks, Mike is just a stunningly talented animator. He literally animated the whole thing on a PC in his bedroom all by himself. I know he showed it at a bunch of festivals, but I'm not sure if it got on a DVD or not. It was a finalist at Alice's 3-minute Film Festival so maybe you saw it there?
MZ-37 is such a workhorse-- just about everyone I know who does sound effects recording on miniDisc uses the 37. I think the replaceable batteries just makes it the right machine for field use. Still-- I really should look at getting one of these handheld audio flash recorders. It is 2009, after all.

Big thanks, Dub-C! I'm liking how they're coming out, and they're fun to make. Glad you enjoyed listening to it, too. I'm actually doing some VO for some internal videos at work this week, so I'm glad I got this practice in.
Zip's a monster on the court. Incredible player, totally lived up to the hype. But B-Hop's spent his career trying to prove he's just as good. Going to be a tough series, to be sure.

I guess I never say! Heh! Forgot about that.
This was my first podcast, and I was still trying to figure out the best way to organize them. At this point, I thought it would be good to drop game stats in the middle of the action, but since then, I found it better to just describe the plays and gives end-of-quarter scores and leave individual stats for the end.
We may never know what the score was at the end of the first quarter of Game 1!
