Just the setup seemed like these old computer games call The Master of Mischief, they were educational games that always had a time limit to solve a mystery using clues gained from doing the subject at hand, weather it was math, literature, history, ect. And you always had a time limit, always had to solve it before midnight
The trick to reverse the shrinking isn't to use magic and have him grow at an equal rate - that'd be far too easy - but rather to turn him into a vampire that can suck the size out of other beings. It'll be progressively easier the smaller he gets because he'll be harder to notice.
