Drawn for a Jak and Daxter 30 day challenge I did back in March. Which was mostly me complaining about how the games were great but missed so many opportunities.
Also I'm doing a mini survey, if you played Jak 2, How did you feel about the amount of Health crates in the game?
When I played I literally saw zero health crates between the turning on the slums water mission and the last trip to Praxis' Palace. It made the game really hard but someone informed me that the games crate placement was fine. I just suck. I was willing to call it a glitch but no, I was informed that me and my 2 siblings must not have been actually looking for the crates to not find them.
Soooo..... how about them health crates?

Well for some reason, I did question the fact on how the health crates are placed around but the main thing that bugged me the most was the sudden damage output that enemies were about to drain on that life bar. Even at points were the hits were able to drain 3-4 bars of life down.
Thus when I jumped into Jak 3, it was a cake walk - and the fact could of just used the light heal to boost that health about.

Yeah the enemies did hit pretty damn hard in Jak 2 (you had 8 segments to the health bar and the enemies hit for a minimum of 2 segments ): so you might as well only have 4 hp like the first game)
Jak 3 was incredibly easy compared to Jak 2 Light Jaks other powers were cool and all, but for me he was almost exclusively a health potion

Right on the money - even more when the game just seem to give you some kind of areas to explore and it was just riddled with enemies that can just one shot you down - [l ast time your in Praxis palace, and you gotta rail about ] And don't get me started with the egg hunting, I mean some of the areas you gotta just. . .ugggggh.
I just love jak two for what it is. Remember how the first game was simple and fun?~ Well throw it out the window, this is the real rough world, kid.
That I will agree with - I mean I did love the " Flash Freeze " at least, that was just so much fun in the end.

Having areas to explore was fun in the first game, but just given wide open areas and told to shoot something in jak 2 or 3 was sorta boring. "Hey go kill like... 30 metal heads in the forest that have stealth capabilities AND will shoot at you so you don't know where they are" sort of missions. Getting swarmed was also a problem I had with the Krimson Guard. There's like... no reason ever to fight them ever unless you're out of ammo but they WILL knock hp out of you and never drop any themselves!
I have such a love/hate relationship with Jak 2 It's like... it was a GREAT idea! I love seeing just how DIFFERENT the future is and how this turning point in the series changed the whole series and I love the morph gun! And I love the new cast of characters like Torn and Ashelin and Tess etc. But there are just some parts of the game that feel like they were programmed by someone who believes that "if you aren't so mad at the game that you break the tv by punching it then it's not a good game!" And though I LOVE the story of Jak 2, some of the way the characters were written bugged me... mostly Keira :P

It was really, I mean partly is to show off the game's open vastness and the compatibility of the PS2. But it was that freedom that one had that I really enjoyed the game and even now - I still return back to the game far more than I do with Jak 2. I mean I do return to that game but when I really feel like I got a binge the game though. Yep, the backtracking though the missions then worst when your just stacked with missions left and right. Felt really like a chore in the end.
And something relating to jak 2 was that the game was trying to be really like " GTA " since the hype for that game was all over the place with the PS2 and Xbox at the time soooo, it felt like it was fun but felt a odd taste when you come out from said first game lol. Oh I loved it too and yea. . . I noted something odd about Keira and hell, far more in game three. . . I mean. . where did their pre-set chemistry go? I mean it felt like Tess was just placed in for that in the end. Then LF comes out - well, everything thrown out the door.

Well it did do a good job of showing off that big world! I give Naught Dog this, they really know how to utilize a systems hardware to it's fullest! I never even bothered to collect the Precursor orbs :I I was playing the HD Trilogy for the first time (My first experience with the franchise in fact) with my siblings in what free time we could have together, so orb collecting really wasn't a priority (Though might have made the games easier with upgrades like invincible dark Jak) (Now if they RE-released Jak 2 and 3 with a feature that for every orb I collect I can toggle a Cigarette into Torns mouth you can BET I'd pay new game price and get ALL THE ORBS Just to see cutscenes of Torn with like.... 300 smokes in his mouth.... so he can look like the chain smoker he sounds like )
I do wonder how much Jak 2 was Naughty Dog going "OOH GTA WE WANNA MAKE ONE OF THOSE!" And how much it was "... Well gta is making money so........"
In the first game the characters were a little bland, but Jak and Keira had some obvious chemistry! It showed from the get go that they were into each other, and Keira was a top player in the game because the Duo wouldn't have even made it out of Sandover without her Zoomer upgrades! I love J&D1 Keira, She was literally the gatekeeper for the whole game! Oh no there's lava everywhere... "OH GET ME SOME POWER CELLS AND I CAN BUILD A HEAT SHIELD ZOOMER!" Oh this big rock's in the way.... "HEY WITH SOME POWER CELLS I CAN MOVE IT WITH THIS LAZER!!!" I would normally have called her just "The love interest" but she was SO MUCH MORE and I could see why Jak or ANYONE would be into her!
In Jak 2 you can still see that they hold an interest in each other, as that is the Basis around pretty much their only interactions: The Fight. Keira sort of got pushed aside to make room for this far larger cast of characters and the only thing she was necessary for in the plot was building the rift rider, as that's something only someone as cool as Keira can do. The only other thing of great note that she does is fight with Jak, which isn't bad, this conflict is great in theory actually!! It was just severely underwritten and actually makes Keira look... really bad?
-After the reveal that is was Keira behind the curtain Keira starts talking about rebuilding the rift rider, but wouldn't the first question (after reuniting 3/4 of your team who you probably weren't even sure you all landed in the same place/time) be "Have you guys seen our #4??" especially if #4 is her own father?
-Jak is the one that brings up Samos to Keira, but when he hesitates she asks about him in a tone that is less "What's wrong with my dad!??!?!" and more "What? Is the toaster not working???" This could be less the writing and more the voice actress though.
-Right after the first Race Ashelin comes in to congratulate Jak on winning. Keira becomes jealous of Ashelin and huffs off.
-Before the second race Erol harasses Jak about taking Keira away to be HIS mechanic, then Keira comes out all "Man Erols so awesome! He's the best racer ever!" and all Jak tells her is stay away from Erol, he's bad news and Keira JUUUUUUUMPS down his throat. "You're one to talk! You work for Krew! And people say you get made an hulk out and break stuff!" Jak defends working for Krew, needing his connections to get to Praxis, but instead of defending said Hulking out, he huffs off and Daxter has to race in his place.
-Before the third race Keira and Jak finally make up with Keira telling Jak "YOU'RE the best race I know " and the fight is finally concluded but... nothing led to her ending the fight, they just sort of stopped fighting?
-Helped out with the riftrider balloon. Cool.
The chemistry was still there, but it was buried under all that conflict. Naughty Dog should have added to the "Jak huffs off scene" with Daxter going
Dax:"OKAY TOOTS! JAK DOESN'T WANNA TALK ABOUT IT BUT YOU AND ME? WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT IT!"
*Fades to black* *Fades back from black*
Keira: "I... I didn't know Jak had been through all that... and Erol... he had a hand in it. No wonder... Jak was just trying to protect me and I said all that to him. Why didn't he tell me sooner?"
Dax: "He's sort of new to this whole 'Talking about your feelings' thing. And talking in general!"
Keira: "I just wanted to go back to home. Have everything be normal again. Same old Sandover. Same old you... Same old Jak... nothing can be normal again can it?"
Dax: "'Same old Jak' is still there, he's just got some anger that only mounting Praxis' chrome nose on the wall can satisfy! This is the new normal, get used to it."
Keira: "... I can't believe I'm saying this but... You're right Daxter. OH NO THE RACE STARTS IN 5 MINUTES!!!"
Dax: "JAK'S NOT BACK! WHO'S GONNA DRIVE!?!?!"
Keira: "YOU'LL have to do it Daxter!"

Keira: "--And Jak... YOU'RE the best racer I know!"
A scene like this would have made their chemistry more prominent, made Keira look less... selfish honestly... and could have opened up a rough idea for WHY Keira was acting so volatile in Jak 2: A slight backstory in the above dialogue explaining that her entire issue is that she's focusing on trying to go backwards rather than forwards, which does seem to be a potential reason: Focusing on the rift rider even at the cost of her father not being on the forefront of her mind, having a LOT of issue with just how different Jak has become in the 2 years he's been missing, the extreme jealousy to any threat to their previous relationship as if she owns Jak. It's all there, just severely underwritten.
In Jak 3 all chemistry is gone between the two... as is Keira for the most part. She really served no narrative purpose to Jak 3's story or gameplay and doesn't do anything in the game. I think she gives you a few quests via the radio, but in the first cut scene she's in she doesn't talk so I didn't realize they changed her voice actress to Tara Strong and had thought that it was the Monk (Also voiced by Tara Strong) sending me on missions :I Otherwise I can't think of one notable thing she did, or interaction she had with Jak in the 3rd game. Pretty much everything I loved about Keira had actually been handed over to Tess by Jak 3 :0. Blondie was now the cute bubbly girl who was good at building stuff, provided you switch CAR and GUN specialties.
I almost think it would have been better to have Keira helping people into bunkers while the metal heads and KG bots were attacking and having the bunker get buried when the Palace fell. This would have her doing as much as the actually game did (Aka nothing) but give it the sense that she WAS doing something actively before being knocked out of the game. There could have even been some missions like "The Metalheads disrupted some debris and another bunker has been uncovered! Jak you've got to get to that bunker and defend it from the metal heads so the civilians can get out!" and then get a cutscene after those missions where hes asks the bunker people about her: "About this tall? Green Hair? Have you seen her?" And then eventually they get reunited at the end of the game or just before the end, Maybe even have Keira say something Keira-ish about Jaks new look. Or a call back to Jak 2's fight! : "Jak you've-- changed.... It looks good on you!~"
At least after Jak 3 they tried to do more with Keira. She had that Mini arc in Jak X Combat racing and was back to being a main character in The Lost Frontier (Though still not amazingly written it was a start) They really just need to reboot the Franchise and make sure that Jak and Keira keep their chemistry going!
Sorry this was so long my hobby is severely over analyzing both what Jak and Daxter did good and what it fell flat on, and the treatment of Keira is a huuuuge one for me
