Chapter 3 - Jkgen
The wolves growled aggressively at the human, they were showing absolute zero sign of backing out. The young man was in front of them with his sword drawn, threatening to cut down any of the canine that attempt to attack, behind him was a little blue dragon whose scales glowed in a similar fashion to the gem that was hanged around her neck.
It's been a week since Leon had found the little dragon, and they were already on the run after the young hatchling he took under his wing caused some mischief in the human settlement.
“Sapphire whatever you do, do not leave my side at all cost.” the human said while tightening his grip around his sword as the wolves slowly began to surround the two of them. With a howl from one of of the wolves, They attacked.
Leon attempted to swing his sword at the advancing wolves but one of them managed to clamp its jaws around his arm causing him to drop his blade. The human screamed in agony, feeling the warmth of his blood gushing from his wound. Before he could do anything to get the wolf off him, he felt a hard blow to the back of his head.
The human collapsed and his vision slowly began to blur. It felt as if he was hit by a brick from behind. It didn't took long for his entire world to became shrouded in darkness and his consciousness faded, the last thing he remembered was some unfamiliar voices and sapphire crying for help.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The human sprang upright, his face looked extremely pale while his forehead were covered in cold sweat. He realized that he was no longer in the middle of the forest but instead he found himself in a small unfamiliar wooden house. He could see a worried sapphire at the side of the bed gazing at him with teary eyes.
“Where… Where are we?” the human asked the young dragon as he attempted to recall the detail of the event that had unfold while clutching his head in one hand, “ugh… what…. happen?”
However, before he could get any answer from the young dragon, a young woman entered the room, her hands was holding a tray and on top of it sat a bowl of hot soup. Her hair was short and brown, but there were a few extra feature he couldn't quite grasped as his head continued to spin, the human wondered if his brain was still playing tricks on him. To him, he saw that on top of the lady’s head stood two cat-like ears, and behind her rest a cat-like tail. The weirdest part of it was the fact that they were moving so organically it's like it's a part of her. Despite all the strange feature of this woman, there was something about it that felt all too familiar.
“I see you are awake now,” the lady said with a sense of relief in her voice, she slowly approached the human and placed the tray on the bedside table while The young dragon gently sway her tail from side to side, observing her movement.
“How long was I gone…” the human asked as he attempted to get a hold of all his senses, His vision was still as blurry as the moment he blacked out.
“Well you have been out cold for the entire day, lady sapphire refused to leave your side ever since they brought you back.” The cat lady answered as she sat beside the bed, “You should be thankful that she is quite attached to you, if it won't for her who know where you might be now.”
“I ... wasn’t able to protect her.” The human looked away, ashamed and angered by the fact that he wasn't able to keep to his promise, “ I sworn I had lost her the moment my vision faded...”
“Don't be sad Leon…” the dragon whimpered while attempting to nose the human, hoping to cheer him up.
“Well... the Village chief had informed me to take you to her once you are awake. She wishes to see you. It seems she has things she wanted to discuss with you. I’ll meet you in the living room once you are ready.” The lady stood up and began strolling toward the door, the way she moved were also reminiscent to that of a cat, her tail swaying from side to side.
The human did not spoke of a single word as he drank the soup, his mind were too filled with sorrow over the “battle” he had lost to actually register the taste of the delicious soup. Leon thought that he was strong enough to be able to protect the dragon by himself before he left his village, he was not too sure now after what had happened. When the human was done, he placed the empty bowl back on the tray and proceeded out of the room with sapphire trailing behind.
“I take it that you are ready?” the cat lady asked to which the human nodded, “Very well, Follow me. The village chief will be pleased to see that you are finally awake.”
With that the lady escorted the Human and the young dragoness out of her home and towards the house that was on a hill. Judging from its appearance from afar, the human could easily guess that the house belong the chief even without having being told where he was going.
As the three of them traveled through the village, the human could see that many of the villager had similar traits of an animal, though they varies with appearance among each individual. Some of them had big ear similar to that of a rabbit or a mouse, while other had horns in a way that they looked more like a cow walking on two leg. Many of them stared at Leon as he passed them, viewing him like some sort of strange outsider.
“Chief, I have brought you the human as you requested” the cat lady said as she took a bow respectfully as they entered the room. To the human surprise, in front of him sat not an old lady but a woman in her prime. Her clothes were white, similar to most of the inhabitants in the village, she too have some animal traits. On her head sprouted two fox ears while she has nine tails that waved slowly behind her. Her hair and fur were as white as the silk of the clothes that she wore.
“Thank you, Angele, you are free of your duty for now, may you have a good rest.” the chief said to which the young lady bowed once more before leaving the two of them with the village chief alone. There were an unsettling silence in the room before the fox began to speak.
“Greeting Leon, I am Livana, the chief of this village. Usually You would not be welcome here, but for what you did for Lady Sapphire, we decided to spare your life and take you in until you have healed,” The chief explained, “However now that you are fully recovered, we ask of you to leave this village and this dragon and never speak of this place ever again”
“No. I’ve risked too much, I refuse to leave Sapphire’s side as I’ve vowed to protect her till the very end,” The human protested his fist clenching, “Isn't there any other way where I could continue to stay by her side?”
“Spoken like a true warrior,” the chief smiled, “However if you wishes to stay, you are required to fight our strongest man... to the death, to prove how much you are willing to put on the line for lady Sapphire.”
“Leon… Please don't do it… I don't want you to get hurt like mummy.” the dragoness tugged on the lower part of the human’s pant with her claws with a worried look in her eyes.The human looked at the dragoness before returning his attention to the kitsune and gave a nod, accepting the duel to which the kitsune smiled once more.
“If you are ready, follow me to the field behind the house,” Livana directed, “ Galvin, our village's greatest warrior will be waiting for you there, I had already told him what to do If you accept the challenge.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leon began to walk into a small field surrounded by wooden fence. The village chief and sapphire were watching them from outside the boundary. As Leon prepared himself, he noticed a man of an average build in front of him, his head rest two wolf ears and a wolf like tail could be seen from his rear. Leon took a look at his new sword that was given by the village chief just prior of him entering the “arena”. It felt light but sturdy.
“Are the both of you ready?” the chief asked, to which the both of them nodded, “Both of you are now free to engage!”
In a flash, the man transformed into a wolf and began charging at Leon with his blade in between his jaws. Leon was caught off guard by this sudden ability, but he was barely able to dodge the strike.
“Not bad, I’m actually surprise you didn't decide to run away upon hearing a battle that put you life at stake,” the wolf transformed back to his human like form before slashing his sword at Leon, “From what I’ve seen human are always a coward when they are about to lose their life”
“Sorry but you must have been mistaken” the human manage to parry away the attack before attempting to throw out as many jab with his sword as he could, “I’ve made a promise, and I’m willing to die by it!”
The wolf man dodged all of the human strikes with ease despite Leon greatest effort, returning a blow each time Galvin saw an opportunity. As the battle raged on, the human was struggling to keep up with the speed of the wolf man.
“Hah!” Leon slashed again barely even touching a hair off of galvin.
“Your strike are uncertain and weak, are you trying to give me a haircut or kill me?” the man taunted before hitting Leon away with the pommel of his sword.
The dragoness watched as the two warrior clashed, looking awfully worried about the human, though their time together have been short, she had grown to care dearly for him.
“Leon…” the young dragon muttered, watching Leon getting hit again by the wolf man’s blade.
“Do not worry about the human” the chief said before giving the young dragoness a pet on her head.
“Gah! Ugh...” the human stumbled backward, his body was now covered in wounds and bruises, his clothes badly cut, yet in front of him his opponent still looked untouched.
Leon stumbled forward and gave one more weak swing to which his sword was parried away from his hand, he felt a blow of the pommel of his opponent’s sword against his shoulder, and he fell to his knee.
“So I guess you are ready to die now?” the wolf warrior asked, before placing the bladed edge of his sword against Leon’s neck, threatening to slice his head clean off his body.
“no no no NO!” the dragon cried out and attempt to run to Leon but was held back by the kitsune chief.
Leon didn't say a word, he was also too weak to move. The human had failed sapphire again and from this fight, it proved of his unworthiness to protect her.
“At least… I will get to see mum again…” the human thought as he closed his eyes, preparing for the moment of a swift painless death to come, but it never did.
As the human opened his eyes in confusion, Galvin took his blade off his neck and sheathed it. He smiled as his extend one of his hands outward.
“Why… why did you spare me?” The human questioned, confused why he was allowed to live, “ I thought this is suppose to be a fight to the death”
“You have proven yourself worthy by fighting to the bitter end for the sake of lady sapphire. Though you may have lost the battle you have won our trust, and I doubt lady sapphire would be pleased if I have you killed.” The man explain as he turned toward Livana to see the her nodding in approval while she continue to held onto a crying sapphire, “ If you wish to protect lady sapphire, You need to begin training to become strong enough to defend her, and I’ll be the one that's going to help you get there.”
Leon grabbed Galvin’s hand and was lifted back onto his feet, he may be covered with wounds from head to toe but hearing that he could get stronger, all the pain faded. The human was later led back into the chief's house, where his wound were tended by one of the kitsune’s assistant.
Leon winced as he felt some of the herbs pressed against his wound while multiple thoughts were running through his head. After the stinging pain of the medicine faded, the human turned towards Livana.
“Actually, not wanting to sound rude but I would like to know something… why do the entire village constantly refer to sapphire as lady sapphire?” The human asked the chief.
“Well you see… We Jkgen worship dragons and lady sapphire’s mother is one of our goddess, promising to protect our land if we offer her food as tributes. Though as of late, Lady Aria had stop coming here, I was beginning to get worried that something bad had happened to her.” The kitsune replied her tails swaying as hypnotic as ever, “ My fear was confirmed after lady sapphire told me what happen while you were unconscious, she seems to have taken a liking to you, refusing to leave your side ever since you were knocked out.”
“Leon is a good human, she say constantly. But due to the tension between our two race, we needed to put you to the test and see it for ourselves whether if you are really what she said to be and whether you could be trusted.” Livana explain, “We wouldn't want anything to happen to our village now would we?”
“So how much did...ugggh… sapphire told you?” the human groaned once more, feeling another herb was placed against his wound while the young dragoness whimpered beside him, nuzzling against his leg as if attempting to comfort him.
“She told us everything that had happened to her the past few days, how she lost her mother and how you helped her, she even told me of your relation with the blue lightning.” The kitsune revealed. “It's been so long since I heard that title, you and your mother was quite famous among many Jkgen villages including ours, thus it is also the second reason why we choose to spare you once we are certain who you really are.”
“Either way, You have proven yourself in battle, no one will be so committed in a fight if he or she had been faking it.” Livana chuckled, “ By anything, most challenger would usually be running away for their live let alone foolishly agreeing to it in the first place.”
“There is another thing I wish to ask you Chief. Earlier in battle… Galvin was able to transform into a wolf… does that mean that everyone here in the village are able to transform as well?” Leon questioned, “Does that mean that those packs of wolves I’ve encountered before I came here are all people of the village as well?”
“Yes, that is a gift that all Jkgen share, we all possess the ability to shapeshift. However, this ability require some expense of our magic,” the kitsune answered, “ And you are correct, those wolves are our warriors, they were so happened to be scouting for threat when you were passing by.”
“Chief Livana, i had set up the place to stay for the human as you requested.” A muscular man walks into the room. Through his appearance, Leon could have easily guessed he was a grizzly bear.
“A place to stay?” sapphire ask as she walked up to sniff the bear man, “Can I stay there too?”
“Lady sapphire, why would you want to stay there? You can stay here with the chief where you can be safe.” The bear asked, trying his best to not offend the little dragon.
“Because Leon have help protect me many times!” sapphire yelped before running back towards the human. “Leon make me feel safe!”
“If you insist lady sapphire, we cannot stop you.” The chief spoke, “I would have personally preferred you to stay here though. well I believe the two of you should follow Markos here, he will take you to the house where you will be staying.”
The human and the young dragoness thanks the Kitsune before departing with the bear man. It didn’t took long for Leon and sapphire to be escorted to their new home by Markos, As Leon turn the knob of the door, it slowly creaked open, revealing the inside of the house. It appeared to be rather furnished with multiple art and a good deal of furnitures complete with a nice fireplace. The entire place felt warm and welcoming.
“ I hope you like it here human,” The bear laughed, “Me and my pal worked hard getting this house back into shape”
“Back into shape?” The human asked, “what do you mean by that?”
“Well this place was a bit rundown before you came since it used to be the home of our dragon priest before he was gone. He was a happy man willing to put his life on the line not just for our goddess but also for our entire village. He made an honorable sacrifice for all of us.” The bear explained, “He would be happy to let you stay in his home too if he were still alive today.”
“I see… that's very unfortunate,” Leon replied, “I would have loved to meet him.”
“ Alright then, if you need anything, me and my boys will be at our forge nearby. You can come look for us anything you wamy” markos scratched the back of his before bidding his goodbye and left.
“Leon…. I’m hungry….” the dragon tugged on the human pants once more, “Livana said that there is a really nice meat shop nearby.”
“Alright sapphire, Let’s go grab us some bite to eat.” The human smiled, “Speaking of which I should probably buy myself some new clothes while I’m at it. I looked like a mess”
With that the pair exited the house and headed in the direction towards the butcher shop.
