On the day of this posting - June 24, 2009 - it is exactly one month until Florida's own 'furry convention' ("Megaplex") takes place in Kissimmee. The theme for this year's con is "Toyland: Christmas in July"...
The "Megaplex" staff had been requesting appropriate 'anthro art' (complying with said theme) for their convention program book. So, I'd sent a number of images from my handmade holiday greeting cards (some of which appear in my "FA" gallery).
But since all of my past artwork involve a snowy backdrop, I'd decided to blend a Christmas image with a summertime setting. So, I took the image of 'Sergei' the lion and superimposed it with a bright, sunny scene from New York City. (I would've used a beach scene, since the con takes place in Florida, but it always looks bright and sunny there, even on Christmas!)
The photo I'd chosen was one I'd taken back in the late 1980s, when I had participated in the Five Boro Bike Tour (sponsored by American Youth Hostels). In this annual event, cyclists from all over the world would take a 35-mile tour of the 'Big Apple', as they would travel through Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
This particular photo was taken on the Queens side of the 59th Street Bridge - in Queensboro Park, by the East River - with an incredible view of the Manhattan skyline. (To the left of 'Sergei', you can see the twin towers of the World Trade Center [pre-'9-11']; and to the right of him, you can see part of the United Nations building, along with the tops of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.)
Unlike the photo I'd sent to the "Megaplex" crew - which was in B&W - I'm offering the color version of it, so you can enjoy this panoramic view even better.
And since this IS June 24th, it's only fitting that I post it on the day exactly six months until Christmas Eve; so get your shopping done early!
P.S. I plan to attend "Megaplex", so if anybody in "FA" wants to meet me and draw something in one of my sketch books, look for someone in a Santa's cap with a small greenish book and a large black book (that used to be a ledger). I may return the favor by drawing something for you...

If you are able to make it to "Megaplex", Chubby Husky, maybe we could go to one of the many buffet eateries in central Florida instead. Which reminds me; if you want data on the con, visit http://www.ppmp.info/
Sorry I'd put this in the wrong spot, CH!
