The Poser of Positive Thinking (aka Nothing is the Answer)
As with my previous piece, You Can Never Go Back, there is not really a lot that can be said about this one, other than that it’s another exercise in spilling discontent and depression out on the page, which is usually a far better option than letting it fester inside.
There comes a certain point in nearly everyone’s adult life, where the reservoir of tolerance you have for widely-accepted, pop-psychology, ‘positive thinking’ mantras that are not only lies, but not even creative ones at that, seems to shrink down to roughly the size of a thimble.
There are also three small references within the piece. The first is a line from Stephen King's 1982 short story: Apt Pupil which was made into a 1998 film starring Sir Ian McKellen and Brad Renfro, as well as a reference to the Monty Python song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from The Life of Brian, and finally, a reference to Paul McCartney's song Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey from Wings' 1971 album: Ram.
(Also, in response to a question I already received, yes, the double negatives in the piece were deliberate).
