Draconis, aka
jugularjaguar and I got to do a mascot gig in Nashville on Sunday and Monday. It was for the Dollar General trade show and Draconis got to suit as the Energizer Bunny and I got to be his handler. Nothing beats getting paid for what you love to do. The people would light up when we walked by as we were given the whole venue to work. We had a great time and got to meet lots of interesting folks. We scored tons of swag as almost all of the vendors GAVE AWAY their display items at the end of the show. It was almost like watching looting in Los Angeles. We literally filled our car with as much stuff as we could carry. Many of the vendors donated stuff for
fangcon's charity auction. I hope they call us to do this again next year... we'll keep going and going and going...
Other mascots we saw at the event were Tony the Tiger, Captain Crunch, and the Bumblee Tuna mascot. The pink bunny ruled the lot, by my standards.

It was a lot more than that. Just about every product you have ever seen in a Dollar General store was there. The vendors started giving away the displays on Monday. I picked up about 8 rolls of LED Christmas lights, a bunch of movies, My Little Pony stuff, powdered drink mixes, spaghetti sauce, totes for our swag, about a case of different Mountain Dew products, Energy drinks, air fresheners for the car, spray for the mascot costume, slippers, socks, a belt, Sharpie markers, Snuggie tails, a bunch of flash drives, drink cups, 2 pineapples, chips, snack cakes, candy, a slew of Hot Wheels (including one treasure hunt), etc...
One part of the event was a "mock" Dollar General store that was fully stocked like it would be for Christmas. That was where I scored all of the Christmas lights. At one point they just "opened" the store and everyone was invited in to take what they wanted. Fortunately for us, many of the people there had flown in and were very limited in what they could "steal".
We felt really cool doing this. The people around the event would "light up" when we went by, with some saying "he keeps going... and going..." Draconis, unfortunately, couldn't see this too well as he had a very limited field of view and the head barely turns (as in only about 5 degrees from side to side). I'll post some photos of the event in a bit.
Funny thing is we were only able to get like four AA batteries. We were working the mascot when they "dumped" their boxes. They only brought AA batteries and people were just scooping them up by the arm loads from the table. There were other things we missed, too, like the booth that had LED motion lights and lanterns, but hey, we did all right.
This was actually a pretty well made suit and I learned some things while working with it. I can't go into detail about the suit without violating our trust (like I couldn't take pictures of it in pieces, etc.). I can say that it could use better ventilation and definitely needed a handler to help suit-up and move around. Suits that are made to be worn by multiple sized people have some interesting features built in, though. Overall, it was well built and a really interesting experience.
The other mascots there didn't look nearly as cool as the Energizer Bunny. Captain Crunch, I just felt sorry for as he could only stand in one spot and flail his arms. He didn't have a handler and I think he was limited to his "spot" in their booth. Tony the Tiger was there, and I'll post a pic of him in a bit. The Bumble Bee Tuna mascot just doesn't make a connection with their product. A bumble bee wearing a shirt with an anchor on it? At least the Bunny has a history that makes sense.
